it is prudent that there are these preperations, against equal forces, but there is no glee in it (IMO).

...sorry to rain on the parade again, but i wonder how many of you have smelled death?

Wow somebody got there knickers in a twist..... There will be no war here and if there is its the end for us all...
Can't remember who mentioned the Falklands, but on checking they only lost one Sea Harrier to enemy fire and all the ships where hit by..... You guessed it Exocet!
And the answer is yes.

This thread is about the Cyprus National Guard!

It is a Defence Force against outside aggression!

It is there to Defend the Cypriot people and protect the RoC's territorial integrity!

Death came to the island when Turkey invaded and they still threaten us, so we arm ourselves against them otherwise we would be defenceless!

RW, do you disagree?

No it is not the end of us all!

Never underestimate the CNG but at the same time don't under estimate the enemy I would agree! You however overstate things to say the least!

Fighting a war is not about how many Fighter Jets you have! First, someone will have to move! Either the Turks must invade into the free areas or we advance into the occupied zone. Then it is urban warfare! One town at a time and from house to house! I don't think for a second it will be clear cut at all.

The most mobile force will prevail eventually no matter what is in the skies!

I am not advocating it! What I advocate is for our ability to defend ourselves!

I mean that if there is a war here in Cyprus or they are dragged into the current situation in Syria say. The upshot will be that it would escalate and drag many more countries along, the out come of that scale of fighting would be disaster to Cyprus as an Island no matter which side of the divide you live on.

This mentality and form of disrespect to the Armed Forces is destructive!

Before Greece was in dire trouble and during the Imia Crisis I was in Glyfada, Greece and staying with a former HAF F5 pilot watching everything unfold! You would always hear some ill informed Greeks say, thst if Greece has a war with Turkey, it will be the end of Greece!

How? How the fuck would they be able to invade each heavily defended Greek Island? How the fuck can their navy move through the Aegean and evade every single Greek Submarine? How the fuck would their jets reach Athens whilst each Turkish Jet will be surrounded by 2 or 3 Greek Jets?

How?

How?

How?

I don't know the answers to those questions so perhaps Mik or RW can enlighten me!

what I believed is that if there was a war, Turkey could be defeated, at least on paper! The Greek Navy and Airforce was superior on paper! But again, it is still not clear cut so don't misinterpret me.

The only advantage I could see they have is along the Thracian border but how would they break those defences up there? The Greeks probably have 50,000 troops in that area!

What is clear to me is that by not treating the Turks the way they should be treated, there is a political cost from which we can't recover!

At Imia, Turkey would have been singing a different tune as they would have soiled themselves if the Greeks had sunk a ship!

But alas.....

It is an example I used to try and explain why we are always on the backfoot!

I will give you another example! When the US and British were entering Faluja, Iraq, there were no Iraqi Armed forces to be seen. There were, some War Lords and a group of Rebels that were ill equiped and not well trained!

US and British commanders gave themselves 6 days to secure the town. The Special Forces were in first, and Abrams Tanks and all the air support you needed was in the sky!

It took them 21 days to clear that town out of a few "ragheads" to use GR's terminology!

In the process they lost dozens of soldiers! In that kind if environment, the jets in the sky can't really do much and you don't know what or who is inside each house! Russian Roullette my friend, even for tge best armed nation in the world!

They were following the "Hearts and Mind" stuff. This is a different age of warfare. Civilians matter, just look back to the Second world War, would they have expended that amount of manpower just to save collateral damage? No they would have turned the village into a greasy smear. Cyprus cannot afford Greece an Turkey using it as there own playground....
Yes your out....
