Do I have to go to the army?

Postby insideman » Wed May 15, 2013 10:34 pm

Hey all!

Today my mother got a call saying that I have to go to the army. I am only 16 right now and turn 17 next year in February.
I am behind 1 1/2 years in school (because of where I come from, we start later) and I really cant afford to lose time in the army!

Details:
Mother: Cypriot born in South Africa - has a Cypriot Passport and ID
(mothers side) My Grandmother & Grandfather both born in Cyprus

Father: Portuguese born in south Africa - Has a South African and Portuguese passport and ID.
(fathers side) My Grandfather & Grandmother both born in Portugal (lived in South Africa)

Me: I have South African, Cypriot and Portuguese ID and Passports
I was born in South Africa and lived here for only 5 years

So will I need to do the army? Is there any way for me to get out of it?
P.S My parents don't mind getting the Cypriot passport terminated, because they agree about my problem with school.

Thank you!!

if you have a cypriot passport you cannot escape from the army. i suggest you declare yourselm muslim and claim conscientious objection. if you also say you have a terkish cypriot girlfriend then they will not touch you with a barge pole.

You'll have to forgive our Lordo insideman... he is a well-known Turkish Agent.

You say you have a CY ID card insideman, do you have the CY citizenship as well...??? Male citizens are obliged to do the full 25 months.

The only other thing to add is that the obligation to serve runs through the male line including grand-fathers, so as your paternal grand-father was born in Portugal, it would count in your favour ... if you haven't got the citizenship., but the obligation also goes back to grandfathers and the grandfather who was born in CY would make you liable to serve.... albeit for a reduced term.

BUT... and again... the important thing is, do you have CY Citizenship...???

Behind the times BillC, we now have equal rights and either parent being Cypriot makes the offspring Cypriot!

You will probably get away with six months insideman.

If you are in full time education, it will be deferred till you have finished.

- Anyway, I thought you don't have to do it till you are at least 18 years old?

If ELAM takes control, this shite will change immediately. All CY citizens will only be allowed of a single citizenship, and all men and women will have to serve 18 months of active military service.

insideman many years ago they tried to change the law from if your father was non cypriot to not doing the military to doing the military if either one of ur parents r cypriot,as far as im aware if ur father is non cypriot u r not obliged to do the military service but your case is different in that u already have the cypriot nationality which is a big mistake on ur side, the only way of getting out of doing it is either by finding a way of dumping the cypriot nationality or leaving cyprus

Postponing your military service to finish high school is not an issue. Just visit the ministry of defense with all your paperwork and sort it out.

As for evading your service altogether… unless you’re gay why would you want to do that?

EVERYBODY serves his country unless you plan on leaving Cyprus and never returning in which case good luck and don’t come back!
