Yes I do not doubt his sincerity or love for Cyprus at all!
Makarios was a leader of his people, not a statesman. There were no other leading figures at the time, he was the obvious choice of the vast majority of the people.
His stern refusal to have anything to do with Americans, or American bases in Cyprus was, with hindsight disastrous.
At least he kept.....prostitution and drugs out of Cyprus, which by the way has the highest number of prostitutes per head of the population to any other European country. Enough to go round for...all!!
He loved Cyprus unconditionally but made dreadful errors not least his notorious speech in Panayia concerning the T/Cs.
