Is that right? I never heard this before.

I was of the view that Makarios was appeasing AKEL who were in coalition with his Government.

Akel did influence his decisions greatly. The above was rumored to have been told to someone by Makarios, it makes sense though, the 60's the drugs, sex, morality, and an Archbishop as President. Being an Archbishop and leading a country, would you want that sort of behavior in your backyard?

No I can understand how a cleric can come up with that no matter how misguided.

The 60s and 70s were an interesting time in the US and Australia I am told. Troops were in Vietnam fighting a long futile war and back home there was a hippy movement, lots of sex, drugs and rock and roll. There was a lot of turmoil on the streets and revolution was in the air.

Hardly an evil and depraved society. It seems silly that the fate of the RoC should depend on such silly triviality or ideology for that matter.

Makarios always had Cyprus' interest at heart,Cypriots of all types loved him immensely and still do, as a matter of fact i grew up with a picture of him hanging over the fireplace, but an Archbishop leading a country in todays world or the world in recent past, just didnt make any sense....I saw a pic of him recently on the internet a year after the invasion of 74 and you could see that things had taken their toll on him.

we really need to know the subject well before we can comment. makarios was a megalomaniac and only cared for himself. gcs and tcs lost everything in 55, 58, 63, 67 and 74. what the hell did he do to help or reverse anything. bugger all.
he had a chance for everybody can go to their properties in 72 and he refused.
