The Treaty of Guarantee does not prohibit Cyprus from joining Nato, just like it didnt prohibit Cyprus from joining the EU..

"..Article 1 paragraph 2 of the Treaty of Guarantee does not prohibit Cyprus from becoming a member of a regional organisation such as the European Union. Membership of the EU would not constitute participation ``in any political or economic union with any State whatsoever''.."

Are you adding your own sections to it ?

The two are incompatible and conflicting.

ie: If a non NATO member was to attack Cyprus back in the mid 60s, who would supposedly come to Cyprus’ rescue? NATO or the alleged “guarantors”? etc, etc , etc...

But don't sweat too much over this because it's a pointless argument.

Not even the deep economic crisis has managed to instill some common sense in the bigots of this forum. See you next year.

If there was a little grease it would hurt a lot less but Greece is ruthless when dealing with Cyprus... she likes the full Greek, dry like a desert!

Nato like the EU are not states. Cyprus can join either one or both.

We are already a "NATO base" (without say) with the SBAs, the US listening stations plus Turkey's 40,000 filthy troops.

It was never up to Cyprus to join NATO - it's still not up to Cyprus whether it joins. Note well, it's EU relations they want to normalise ... and no one is inviting Cyprus to join NATO.

Thank God we have Greece.

The reason why Cyprus was destroyed in 1974 is because NATO feared that the Soviet Union would get a foothold in the Med!

Unfortunately, we managed to somehow mismanage the Geostrategic realities and for that we paid a very big price.

Yes I believe Cyprus could join and from that the Treaty of Guarantee would hopefully be dissolved as NATO would become responsible for the RoC's ultimate security and territorial integrity.

Yes NATO wants to normalise relations with the EU because the RoC is excluded from all EU and European Security summits by Turkey (even though Turkey is not in the EU). NATO does not want Cyprus excluded either.

I know what you are saying. But how is it that many other countries violate Treaties they signed? Turkey's signature for instance is worth next to nothing.

Let's say Cyprus applied in 1963. The US would be mad to not allow the RoC to join. Let's say they are now made aware of the Treaty.

Well they could force Greece and Great Britain to renege their obligations. They could do the same with Turkey since NATO we undertake all security obligations.

So why would the US do it? Well, they could come and go as they please. Cyprus would just be a huge NATO base for them.

Just saying!

What is clear to me is that we mismanaged the RoC badly.

Makarios naively at the time,1960's, didnt want Americans in mass, anywhere near Cyprus or Cypriots...He cited the moral depravity of the Americans, ie hippies, drug use and morally unacceptable behavior that they exemplified especially back in the 1960's...
