Safest city for cats in cyprus

Postby V-War » Fri May 03, 2013 1:04 pm

Hi all,

Just wondering what city(village just outside) I should live in to have the least problems with my cats being shot or poisoned.
I live in Paphos now, which somebody recently said was the hillbilly state of cyprus ;) and not a pet-friendly place.

Is there any area in cyprus where people will not harass each others pets per se?

Somebody from Nicosia told me that Larnaca should be a bit more relaxed regarding animals.

thanks!

If your cats live outside then the number 1 danger are the cars which can run over them. If your cats stay inside your house / garden then there should be no problem in most places in Cyprus. But if you want to avoid villagers then don't stay in a village ;) ... stay in the city (as long as you can protect your cats from the cars) or in one of the more expensive suburbs (e.g. Kalogiri or Panthea in Limassol), or maybe in some of the developments made especially for foreigners.

Cats are in more danger from cars and snakes than people.

Agios Athanasios

Postby Tim Drayton » Fri May 03, 2013 8:40 pm

I live in the Agios Athanasios suburb of Limassol. One of my cats has gone out twice a day for about the past seven years, and has so far always come home. I have heard of no cases of pet poisoning in the area where I live - where a lot of the local people also have pet dogs and cats. I can't give any guarantees, though, and I must confess that I give a small sigh of relief every time my cat comes home. In fact, as Sotos says, the main danger is probably the roads. I regularly see dead cats lying on the arterial road passing through our area.
Urban, middle-class Greek Cypriots are pet friendly in my experience. As Sotos says, middle-class suburbs are probably the places for you.

Think your cats are safer in Cyprus.

So are cat's not liked in the UK?
Or are these just isolated cases and I have no right to judge an entire country?

I live 800 meters from Tim and three out of our total of six cats have vanished - two within hours of each other, the One appeared to have been shot at with an airgun just a few days before she went missing: at about the time we lost our two together someone else local complained they had lost cats and mentioned the possibility of poison.

Hi all,

Thanks for you replies :D

I live in an outskirt of Paphos now, problem is that 4 weeks ago my cat got shot.

Many of my neighbours are hunters, but unfortunately I do not know who did this.

Luckily and amazingly the bullet just stopped 0.2 inch before his spine. Saw it on the computer xray at the vet.
And he recovered in 1 week. Unbelieveable.

But now I am scared to let him out again for it must have been somebody here in the neighbourhood.

We are now considering moving because of this.
