A Turkish research vessel Piri Reis, a ship notable for escalating the Turkish-Greek conflict in 1987 and spending the last years doing oil and gas exploration around Northern Cyprus, has sunk in the Ionian Sea after colliding with another ship ConSouth near the Greek coast, RIA Novosti reports.
Piri Reis’s crew of 17 had two people killed and 8 gone missing.
ConSouth suffered no serious damage. The ship sails under the flag of Antigua and Barbuda. Its 16 crew members come from Russia, Philippines and Poland.
Rescuers are searching the area 80 miles away from the coast. Motorboats, an S-130 plane and a helicopter were mobilized.
