To clarify, this is a Great White & not a Mako.....
The Great White has 3 rows of triangular teeth as in the picture. The Mako has 3 rows of more tubular/stick like structure teeth.
I researched these types of shark for over a 100 hours whilst compiling a 15 minute lecture on Killer Sharks while I was in the Royal Navy and read about 3 books and studied them on DVD & TV for about a further 30 hours.
Welcome Coxyr1
- it's very difficult to make a definite classification that this is a Great White because the dorsal fins are not in view. But if you look carefully, the other distinguishing features to suggest this is a Mako are the streamlined shape (GW would be broader), the pointy tip of a nose, the large eye and the lack of a clearly defined demarcation line to the dorsal steely blue-ness. Apparently this blueness fades after death which is why it can be confused with a GW (but still bluey here) if the other criteria are not compared. Finally, the teeth which you mention protrude in the lower jaw of this specimen which is perhaps the strongest indicator that this is not a GW as they would otherwise be further into the jaw so that as it closes they are not visible (in the GW). Really appreciate your input.
I totally agree with what you are saying & I'm not an expert but I LOVE sharks... The picture isn't the best to help identify which type of shark it is (for sure)...
You have to look at the facts.. HOw many Mako's actually come in to the Med? Spread over the last 20 years, how many positive sightings & why?
Now the GW.... We know their favourite food is seal. But they also like dolphin ( most GW are found with dolphin in their stomachs) & tuna...
Tuna come to lay their eggs when the sea temperature is warm enough (not normally this early) & then the male tuna follow.
BUT.... it's been a warm winter.. Summer has arrived early. HAve the tuna also arrived early, hence this shark?
I would LOVE to know the facts....
I just wish that this gorgeous animal was still alive & swimming around in the Med or where ever...
