Help re trapping a feral cat - Limassol area

Postby BerkshireScouse » Thu Apr 25, 2013 9:42 am

Hi

We live in Episkopi (near Limassol), and are currently looking after 5 feral cats (the mother, two from her previous litter who are about 7-8 months old and who have both been neutered, and two from her most recent litter, who are now nearly 3 months old). As you may imagine, trying to look after all 5 cats is proving to be rather stressful and expensive.

Unfortunately, we are fairly certain that the mother is pregnant yet again, and we are desperate to trap her soon, in order that her current litter can be aborted and that she can also be spayed. However, despite numerous attempts, we have so far failed to entice her into a cage. (Incidentally, we intend to try and rehome her two youngest, ideally whilst she is absent recovering from surgery).

Does anyone know of any local animal charities or organisations in the Limassol/Paphos area which are able to trap animals? Alternatively, can anyone recommend any forms of medication (conventional or herbal) which are effective?

Many thanks in anticipation of your assistance.

Like you said Cyprus cats are feral and so fend for themselves.

They don’t need you so just let them out and they’ll find their way in life.

You shouldn’t feed them either.

Other than catnip for putting them off guard (if they are susceptible to it) none of the other herbal relaxants I've tried work - and they are very expensive. Also, it's probably best not to (effectively) tranquilize a feral cat as she wouldn't be able to survive tricky situations that they can normally get themselves out of if fully alert.

If her kittens are 3 months old, she's probably pregnant and beyond the safe stage when she can be neutered (unless practices have moved on). Best bet is to look after her until she's had the others and then as soon as they are born, if she's around, take her for neutering - the vet will tell you precisely when they can neuter after having a litter - but it's only a matter of a few weeks as far as I recall, before they are pregnant again.

Good luck - and well done so far. :)

I would get on the blower to the animal charity, Pahiakos, in Paphos:

I know that there exist special boxes for trapping feral cats which snap shut once it enters, having been enticed inside with a tidbit. Paphiakos may be able to rent you one (or even supply it free of charge). I think they will also neuter ferals free of charge.

Foreigners should leave our feral cats alone and quit playing mother Teresa!

If they want to breed we let them breed because we want their numbers preserved and when there’s too many the excess get run over and that’s how we preserve the delicate balance that has existed in Cyprus for a long time.

The many feral cats are necessary to keep mice, rats, locusts, snakes, cockroaches, and other undesirables in check.

It’s delusional to assume that feral cats need you or that you are going to save this country!

Tough luck. I brought two orphaned feral kittens home and have raised them as pets. I will play Mother Teresa all I wish, than you.

 Your cruelty knows no bounds! Those two juicy kittens would’ve made a nutritious meal for a young feral stud who would’ve gone on to impregnate 10-15 fine females!

I was hoping the influx of Chinese might keep their numbers down.
