They had probably spotted another one further down the road.

Wrong. They don't even have collars. By the way, if the chap who goes away for a walk twice a day so wished, he could run off and never come back again. He knows where his home is.

when the Mayor was trapping cats (he found 9 outside his house one day, trying to break in) the only one stupid enough to get trapped was one of our home cats. we then put collars on ours simply so he would know it was not feral but had a home to go to.Ours (but we only have one at present) are free to come and go. .

A friend was in the British Army and was called out to man the "Gereen Goddess" when the UK Firebrigade went on strike. He told me his team were called out to rescue a cat from a tree. The grateful owner gave them tea and biscuits.

As they left.......

Back to cats being good for keeping the snake population down - I don't think they come off best in any snake interactions.

The worst thing I can think of is lying in bed (with my windows open, of course) in my home village and hearing the rustle of overgrown weeds/grasses, the growling of a cat and the slither of a snake, then a scuffle and commotion and finally a yelp and miaow which comes to a quick stifling end. Next day, the pretty grey slinky cat is nowhere to be found ... :(

...the pink with the long skinny legs are neither lake monsters or cats, they are flamingos.
