Prices of food

Postby chicha92 » Mon Apr 22, 2013 11:12 pm

Hi everyone,

Me and my family are going to Paphos in 3 weeks time on holiday. We are a little unsure on how much spending money to take with us, after the sad news of the financial situation of the country. Can anyone tell me what the food prices are like now, either in supermarkets or at restaurants. Also, is it possible to exchange money over there. Last I heard the banks etc were closed.

Kind regards.

Banks reopened long time ago! The only limit that could affect you as a tourist is that there is a €300 per day withdrawal limit from banks and ATMs. But of course you can use a credit card to pay for almost everything without any such limits... including food in supermarkets and restaurants... so that shouldn't be a problem at all ;) Prices in supermarkets and restaurants depend on where and what you buy. 1ltr of milk is about €1.50. A normal bread about €1 and a six-pack of 1.5ltr bottled water about €2.50 in supermarkets. On Tuesdays you can get two large Dominos pizzas for €9.99 :P

Might be wise to take cash with you... and if you want to change into Euros, you can do so in the shops in the tourist areas... you'll find loads of them, with A-boards outside advertising the day's rate... they offer a better rate than the banks.

I live in Cyprus and I never carry more than 100 euro in cash. Even last month at the height of the bank problems I didn't have a problem paying for everything with my card ... and it is a Popular Bank card.. the one which was resolved... so I don't see how somebody with a card from a foreign bank could possibly have any issue.

Oh... you must be the only CY who can't pull a nice big wad of bank-notes from his back pocket... :D

In all our hols to CY... dozens of them... we always take loadsa cash.

Mrs BillC and the kids will be spending yet another August in CY this year... and my instructions to them is not to rely on banks cos the situation can change... and never trust Mrs BillC with a credit-card... :(

If cash is what you always used then fine... but there is no reason to being cash now if you prefer using cards.

The Euro 300 pd only applies to money extracted from Cypriot accounts. For debit cards etc linked to non Cypriot accounts there is no restriction save the cash limits that the issuing bank may impose, which often permit cash withdrawals of up to say GBP 400 or euro 500 per day.

Are there any problems with the tourist exchanges changing sterling travellers cheques, in to euro currency??
Do they give different euro exchange rates depending on whether you are swapping sterling travellers cheques or sterling banknotes?

Thanks.

What are a travellers cheques?

Do they still issue them?

Credit/Debit cards, and a little cash, are all you need.
