I can identify with one point that was raised earlier, when I visit a village near to mine I often try out the odd greek phrase but almost always get a reply from the Cypriots in English.

Maybe the answer lies in:

Be surprised: I had a chat with two CCC/Carrefour guys the other day - in French

Pretend you don't speak english, but some other foreign language that the natives aren't au fait with. Glaswegian for instance. Then they have to speak to you in Greek

english in an english shop but in a FOREIGN COUNTRY. thats a good point.we all have to learn some basic language of the country we would like to visit.or use sign language ..if u dont want to do both of them,simply dont complain.ı am quite surprised why u r really that much surprised sorry....
