A little help.

Postby UnderwaterMan » Sun Apr 21, 2013 9:17 pm

Hey guys!

This is my first post so please go easy on me! I'm a 22 year old looking to move over to Cyprus within the next year. I've saved up a fair amount of money to help myself. What is the job front like in Cyprus? I'm currently a department manager at a big financial company in England (worked my way up) and I'm currently going through a course to learn the Greek language.

I go to Cyprus upto 5 times a year because I simply love the place and I watch the football team I support too!! So where would you recommend me to (eg which city?) and also what it's like for jobs at the moment.

Any help would be fantastic.

Kind regards

Welcome to the Forum. Unfortunately you have picked a very bad time for coming to Cyprus. The financial services market has just been killed by the EU and we are facing mass unemployment.

If you need a job to live, I think Cyprus will be the wrong place for you right now.

Good luck all the same

Hello UnderwaterMan,

We are also looking to move to Cyprus in 2014-15, and are very worried over the financial crisis that has been taking place there. However, there is also one taking place in the UK, with unemployment rising, businesses closing daily, and people being laid off continuously. Where I am living and working now (I also own a business for the last 1.5 years), there's at least 1-3 shops closing daily.

The rest of my family are in Thessaloniki, Greece, and they had no idea that this was happening over in the UK. Therefore, I do think that the financial crisis has hit everyone. However, I think the people that will 'make it' through this climate might be the ones that want to swerve towards a different way of life. For example in a smaller village, perhaps close to a larger city where you might be able to find work, but where the living costs (village) might be lower.

I have never changed my life like this before, however I do believe there is the right timing for everything, so i think you just have to keep an eye out for the opportunity and wait, making sure that you do not really have a set date of moving anywhere at the moment. So if you find your opportunity next month, go, or maybe in a year, you never know.

I wish you the best of luck & hope that everything goes as you hope for :)

Like Sotiria said, and you probably know already, things are much worse in the UK than the media will display. The UK is very guarded about quite how bad the recession is there as they go by image more than anything to sell to China etc and to keep their currency rating as high as possible without such negative influences that can arise from telling the truth.

Basically, the employment situation is bad all over Europe. Mostly because of the proportion of immigrants around prepared to work for peanuts (which of course buys more than peanuts when sent back home to their own countries).

But, you will be competing with other such migrants - and it doesn't sound like you are qualified since you said you worked your way up and are only 22 years old.

It's never a good idea to give up paid employment and even worse during recessions unless you have another job offer to take up.

Would your employers offer you a sabbatical for 6 months or so? Then perhaps you can come and secure a job before making such a big leap of faith.

Of course, you do have youth on your side so you could throw caution to the wind and live a life instead of being a slave ....

All the best.

GreekIslandGirl is right, maybe because you worked your way up (and assuming you do not have a qualification), you can quickly do something either in the Open University, or get an online diploma enhancing your CV? NCC do very good online courses for people that need to work full time, and they are cheaper than the OpenUni as well. That will solidify any experience that you have gained so far, and it cant do any harm to keep more occupied until you sort out your move.

Yeah, you can buy one of them in the occupied territory. Ask VP for details.

Thank you for taking the time out to reply to my message. As some of you have already pointed out that the numbers of unemployed people in the UK is massively hidden away from the rest of the world. Its hard to get a job anywhere you go luckily i have been with my company since i left school at the age of 16. I will have a look at some of the courses that some of you have recommended. The longer i stay in England just the more money i save up which is better. I got my qualification in January as a qualified scuba diving instructor (Hence the name).

I have asked work about the time off and they have told me i can take up to 38 days leave full pay but anything after is unpaid. As im only 22 i need to think very carefully as i will be moving alone. I was thinking of setting up a business myself but i'm far to inexperienced to do so even after working in the industry for the past 6 years. Would many Cypriots need debt management plans to help with finances? Probably not.

Could anyone recommend any names of little villages near Nicosia?

Thank you.
