As I said before...

Every extra €1 you take in taxes is €1 that is removed from the economy - money not spent in bars, restaurants & shops. With the obvious knock-on effect.

Bearing in mind how 'efficient' government is, the only effect of this tax will be to employ even more civil servants to create the legislation and collect it....

exactly!!!

like Cyprus used to be. what got Cyprus out of the economic disaster after 74, free enterprise, very little regulations by the government..A man could work two jobs without hindrance from anyone. He worked a jackhammer during the day, and by night outside a store front he and his family would open up a souvlaki stand.(much better then any souvlaki you get nowadays, for some reason) No government intervention no regulations. Nowadays these same kids out of college etc.. want a government job thats cushy and easy, the politicians play into that and create them out of thin air in order to get the votes....Where can you nowadays get a street vendor selling you a "Mahalebi", that you have to eat next to his trolley, takes the spoon when you're done, splashes some water on it and serves it to the next guy..

We also need a mansion tax. For those 5 million-plus monstrosities!

It's time something was done to regulate and limit the transactions carried out by people who are only using Cyprus as a money-making venture and bringing the wrath of the Germans down on us. The central coffers should benefit from these people who have been using Cyprus purely for profiteering.

- I'm sure the tax will be minimal for peasants. :)

Tax the rich >>> they go somewhere else >>> Cyprus loses.

How have the "rich" helped Cyprus so far?

The RoC's priority should be working towards freedom for Cyprus. The "rich" coming to or from Cyprus do NOT want to see their investments jeopardised by strong moves towards regaining back the north - it won't be pleasant for stock markets. Perhaps they have been part of the problem of stalled "talks".

We need to stay sweet with the EU - it's our future. We cannot keep chopping and changing. We made the commitment in joining the EU - not for economic gain but removal of the Turks - we have done/are doing as the EU have ordered and now they HAVE to help this member state! We should be pushing for those returns now.

Well, for a start there are all those large houses that you loathe...

All the land purchased from Cypriots, all the building materials, all the labour, all the taxes paid on the materials and wages, all the utility bills, the gardeners, the business from the garden centres, the pool people and pool supplies - all taxed... etc....

And the business for the airports and taxes from airlines flying these 'rich' people that you loathe back and forth...

And the jobs, taxes and materials from upgrading the airports to service these rich people that you loath bringing their ghastly money into the country...

Dare I mention the tax paid on their savings and income...?

The shops/bars/restaurants that open to service their needs...?

You get the idea I'm sure...

Let me make the rest clearer since you cannot read beyond a few words.

How have the "rich" helped liberate Cyprus so far? As I said, that should be the No.1 priority.

Besides, the rich will NOT stay away just because Cyprus becomes more expensive. They don't stay away from Saint Tropez or Nice just because these places are the most expensive in France. People prefer more southerly regions. Now they're being asked to PAY for the privilege. Cyprus can become the most expensive place in the EU if it has to - so long as the EU recognise it for the asset it is and remove the Turks.

I suspect, judging from other similar scenarios, the more expensive Cyprus becomes, the more attractive it will become to the really rich and those positive things you mention above will still exist.
