You should have said
GREEK CYPRIOTS are the NATIVES. Others came by invasion and carried out ethnic cleansing of these native people.
I have never denied the fact that there are Greek Cypriots, Turkish, Maronite or Armenian Cypriots.
What should binds them together is their homeland, the island of Cyprus. All are Cypriots .
Since Cyprus was proclaimed an independent state on August 16 1960 there has been conflict wholly attributed to the reluctance of the Greek and Turkish Cypriots, who lived alongside each other in harmony for hundreds of years,to embrace their new born nation, However, two of the many things that led to the deterioration of peace and harmony should be highlighted. The first, Enosis with Greece and the subsequent T/C plan of taksim was engraved in the minds of the Turkish-Cypriots, in their efforts to defend against Cyprus becoming a part of Greece.
Had the Cypriot people, on becoming independent, embraced their true homeland in its embryonic state, there would have been no inter communal strife, no Turkish invasion and occupation of the northern parts, no settlers amounting to thousands and no prospect of any future conflict.
All that I'm saying is that the connection of Cyprus to Greece has never been of any benefit to the people of Cyprus. No one suggested that the Greek or Turkish Cypriots should abandon either their culture, religion or language, but prioritize the establishment of their new born nation, the island of Cyprus.
Greek Island Girl, I'm not lecturing anyone, merely stating an opinion just as you and anyone else does.
