The rich will go wherever they want to go and free people don't live their lives to cater for the rich! We have people deprived of their human rights to worry about.

Cyprus has one priority and I hope the government and EU do not forget their part in solving the problem.

AND YOUR BELOVED EU HVE NOT BEEN ARE NOT AND WILL NOT BE OF ANY HELP IN GETTING THE TUR*S OUT OF CYPRUS.

IF CYPRUS JOINED THE EU THINKING IT WILL SOLVE THE CYPRUS PROBLEM IT WAS MISTAKEN!

I see the fiscal controls (which were only supposed to last for four days  ) have been tightened this weekend...?

I guess not everybody is happy to let their cash languish in the banks...

In time. Right now, if we were not in the EU, Turkey would have invaded the WHOLE island to seize the Gas reserves. The threats Turkey made to Cyprus against Gas exploration over the last few years, would have been carried out! You don't know Turkey!

A very valid point by GIG.
Indeed the scenario you mentioned could have taken place. Who would have intervened!

They have changed the amount you can transfer out of a notice account from €300 per day (€600 for a joint account) to €5,000 per month...

They have also reduced the amount you can take out of your account on a credit card to €300 so it now matches a debit card...

I find your faith in the EU protecting you from Turkey somewhat incompatible with the Billions of €uros the EU is giving Turkey so that it can become a member... :?

It's not incompatible at all. We may not like it - but in the end the EU has a vested interest in civilizing its closest neighbours. The money is supposed to go towards improving its human rights record, for example. Perhaps this money goes towards helping control Turkey, not because they want it in the EU, but it's like pocket-money that can be taken away if a kid doesn't do its duties and behave in a certain way. The EU seems to be fighting various internal and external wars with money and negotiation - not like wars of old.

Or perhaps they look on 73 million Turkish taxpayers more favourably than a million Cypriots...?

If they did, then Turkey would have been in the EU decades ago; and certainly before Cyprus was given membership as Turkey has been begging entry since the 60s.
