How have the "rich" helped liberate Cyprus so far? As I said, that should be the No.1 priority.

Besides, the rich will NOT stay away just because Cyprus becomes more expensive. They don't stay away from Saint Tropez or Nice just because these places are the most expensive in France. People prefer more southerly regions. Now they're being asked to PAY for the privilege. Cyprus can become the most expensive place in the EU if it has to - so long as the EU recognise it for the asset it is and remove the Turks.

I suspect, judging from other similar scenarios, the more expensive Cyprus becomes, the more attractive it will become to the really rich and those positive things you mention above will still exist.

The rich are feeing France in their thousands because of the Socialist government's 'tax the rich' policy...

Property prices are booming in London, largely due to ghastly rich French people fleeing 70% tax on their earnings for a more favourable tax regime...

Sadly, Socialists don't understand the 'rich'... you believe they all inherited their wealth and sit on mounds of cash all day eating caviare and lighting cigars with €50 notes while plotting ways to avoid paying tax.

The reality is that most 'rich' people worked for their money, are wealth creators, provide employment and pay much more than their fair share in taxes...

Getting rid of the 'rich' that you loath won't help liberate Cyprus - it will just make her poorer...

Cyprus is already one of the most incredibly expensive places in the EU. It's cheaper to be a tourist in Barcelona than in Cyprus and if you've ever been or lived there, you would understand that what Barcelona has to offer is far superior in terms of both quality and price.

The truth is that the current prices in Cyprus are unjustified, especially when you can get exactly the same fucking product in Turkey for half the price.

If you can do better in Turkey, please tootle off. If Spain is more appealing, then scoot!

The rich will go wherever they want to go and free people don't live their lives to cater for the rich! We have people deprived of their human rights to worry about.

Cyprus has one priority and I hope the government and EU do not forget their part in solving the problem.

...there is the Catch-22; we, Cypriots, need the rich, the poor suffer.

take heart mr. john, if you love Cyprus, do not despair (organise as a Cypriot, dialog now and be loving), you will have the moment to speak, and to act, accordingly. beside the crisis that's faced by Cypriots financially, there is the very Sovereignty of the island at stake. never forget that. indeed, had we had a Federal Government free from the distinction of being "Greek" (or "Turkish"), we would likely have had far less invested in Greece (or we would have invested differently); maybe Cyprus can take a page from Canada, which is a Bicommunal State, it acts in the interest of all Canadians, even if there exists Constituent states representing its People as Nations. my question is, where is the Greek Constituency, if there is a Republic, and a Turkish Constituency?

And if we have any decency, as Human beings and toward each other, why not Justice seen for the displaced, so that the island, not just the north is re-populated; enclaves is not a dirty word, if at least for some they return as Communities.

...it's gonna stop soon. (at least in this context) Greece and Cyprus in the end will be far stronger, as our delusions and confidence go round and round, things do not stay the same, but one: Cyprus exists, and it facilitates social-exchange. Cypriots are still very capable, they have always been capable, the big 'differance' is that we are passed the Modern Age, the exchange of Information is key to our survival as Individuals, now that there is a position to choose (to change), and we stand to profit from it with our diversity.

You didn't pay attention to this line Johnny...

Only those 300,000 or greater. That's a lot of money for 1980.

like Cyprus used to be. what got Cyprus out of the economic disaster after 74, free enterprise, very little regulations by the government..A man could work two jobs without hindrance from anyone. He worked a jackhammer during the day, and by night outside a store front he and his family would open up a souvlaki stand.(much better then any souvlaki you get nowadays, for some reason) No government intervention no regulations. Nowadays these same kids out of college etc.. want a government job thats cushy and easy, the politicians play into that and create them out of thin air in order to get the votes....Where can you nowadays get a street vendor selling you a "Mahalebi", that you have to eat next to his trolley, takes the spoon when you're done, splashes some water on it and serves it to the next guy..

Mahalebi will resurrect the economy

Cyprus ought to concentrate on her natural " current" resources, weather, sea, scenery and the incomparable hospitality of her people. Her love affair with the financial "game" its now well and truly over. Its time to bring in the tourists, bring down prices and make Cyprus a value for money tourist destination. A beautiful island and wonderful people.
