Cyprus’ package of new measures.

The government has just announced (live on TV) the new measures to be taken that encompass pretty much every aspect of life from employment to healthcare and a whole bunch of other things which I don’t have the time to go over (or recall; The speech went on for about half an hour so a lot was said) in this post but I’ll point out one or two changes of interest that have been a major burden on the Cypriot economy in the last few years.

1. Henceforth to be entitled to free healthcare you’ll have to be a taxpayer to the RoC regardless of EU laws that were being adhered to up to this point from what I understood.

2. Benefits paid to asylum seekers (and similar groups of foreigners in Cyprus) will henceforth come in the form of food coupons and rent will be paid directly by the government to the landlord. In other words handing out cash to foreigners will be done away with.

3. Unemployment benefits will be cancelled upon rejection of two job offers by the dept of employment.

There’s a whole bunch of other laws that come into effect that target those sponging off the system that will have an adverse effect on TCs, carpetbaggers, asylum seekers, and other abusers of the system.

More on this will no doubt surface in the media.

So far so good.

Commerce Minister Giorgos Lakkotrypis has said that the package includes special incentives to increase employment of Cypriots in the tourist industry, almost the only sector of the economy which remains unaffected by the economic crisis.

Lakkotrypis said the plan provides for employing Cypriots at a ratio of 70 percent and measures aiming at extending the tourist season in Cyprus.

These include licencing the operation of casinos and plan to accelarate the construction of golf courses.

I guess Germany wants to make us do what does not compete with their own affairs. Southerly Sun tourism.

It's kind of where we were going in the 70's before half our island was pilferaged and we had to find alternative money-making-measures - hope the Germans intend helping us get back that 50% to put to good use again!.

The measures are OK, although they could be better... For example...

1. Restrict movement to the occupied areas with only one crossing point (i.e. Ledra street).

2. Enforce Greek language requirement for any job type.

3. Fines for parking violators (pavement/double yellow line parking).

4. Higher salary taxation for govt employees and higher taxation for the bigger landowners.

5. Charge a tax for GCs crossing into occupied and a tax to all others crossing into RoC.
6. Tax TC taxi drivers who come over in mini busses to pick up at Larnace or Paphos.
7. GCs who cross and don't return same day to be fined as they are either supporting the hotels in the occupied or using the illegal airport.
8. Stop and search very late night/ early morning vehicles coming into RoC, as these are likely to be casino players confiscate large amounts of money
9. Outstanding fines, taxes to be taken direct from banks of violators whilst the capital controls are in place.
10. Cease ALL payments and benefits to the TCs and occupied areas.
11. Apply a levy to employers who employ TCs.

There are many more ........

Why should there be a levy to employers who employ TCs?

You are thinking it all wrong.

lol, oil from the cannabis seed, is one of the most nutritious sources of food on the planet; monks have known that thousands of years now.

...malice toward Cypriots and others because they are not "Greek" is not correct (read:Greek). a better effort promotes the Republic as an arrival point, and as a destination, a better place with Grace and forward thinking, upright because despite the grave difficulties they suffer, they represent the Principals Human beings are for. a real, Rule of Law. no time to turn against the north, it is mean spirited and a betrayal to the spirit of a Cypriot intent, stereotyping ourselves as them and us simplifies the debate for those who do not care that Cypriots, people who place Cyprus above their own ethnicity, exist.

...i would not mind personally paying for a travel visa when visiting the north, for example, if anyone with a Cypriot Passport travels Free; this sends a strong message.

...i would not mind that Cypriots who live in the north pay Income Tax, a Premium in that Health Care is paid by all Citizens equally. even if there is a hardship credit, that accounts for the need who as Cypriots, suffer from the care they can receive from, what is, the occupation regime; for those few why not, free.

...buy Cyprus, has a whole new meaning, if it is Cypriots who demonstrate this will, open to each other despite the "geopolitics" of the last fifty years.

...it would be nice if the youth are directly implicated in the mitigation of our Cultural wealth, it ultimately is the value that is worth the most, in need of saving. a youth corps open to bicommunal exchange is a great way to keep young minds focused on their abilities, the land, and the responsibility they have, like others, to this Heritance. leadership skills and merit need their nourishment, if we go beyond what has become an elitist pluticracy most refined in crisis.

...Cypriot NGO should be encouraged, if their membership is open to all Cypriots, and if they concern themselves with issues for Cyprus, without the distinction of being "Greek" or "Turkish", first.

According to audit firm PIMCO, Bank of Cyprus will need 3.96 billion euros and Laiki 3.835 billion euros to restore their capital buffers by June, 2015 under the firm’s adverse scenario.

Cyprus’ third-largest bank Hellenic will need 333 million euros; cooperative banks will need 589 million euros.

The figures are included in a document that a banking official provided to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the recapitalization needs of each individual bank haven’t been made public.

...an interesting tidbit, included in the article about the new measures to stimulate the economy.

Well, someone was calling for a complete Banking collapse and they got their wish.

Cyprus needs to diversify and not just stick to Tourism in the long term.
