As in Queensland any Casino should be state run - one in each of the following places - Nicosia, Protaras, Agia Napa, Larnaca. Limassol, Paphos, and Polis. The only aspect that should be outsourced should be wining and dining, where if possible there should be at least two competing business entities running the catering facilities in each Casino, i.e. restaurants and bars. Likewise, the modern equivalent of the "one-armed bandit", where any business who wants one will rent it, but the government will get a share of the take.

I wouldn't let the government run a hot dog stall...

Let private enterprise carry the costs of setting up and running them - not the taxpayer.

The gubberment can tax the profits.

Casinos would be a good thing for the Government to own and run and they could keep the profits. I think all most Casinos in Australia a publically owned except for Burswood (Packer) in Perth, and MGM in Darwin. Public ownership of Casinos worked reall well in Oz.

Also, Casinos need to be tightly controlled and regulated for the protection of the vulnerable, otherwise there will be all kinds of social problems that need to be fixed by the RoC and that will cost a lot of money.

In Cyprus I bet the Archbishop would love to get hold of a Casino or 2.

Privately run casinos work well in Vegas...

Given that we are broke... where would the guibberment get the money to build the things in the first place...?

Given that they have proved themselves to be fiscally incompetent, why would we trust them to run the places...?

The UK is a good example of how 'protecting the vulnerable' and gubberment interference in the gambling industry (and casinos in particular) has completely destroyed the market (and not protected 'the vulnerable')...

The Government can borrow to set these things up if it were that Skint, and had 0 cash flow which I don't believe is accurate. Casinos are a good business and a good source of revenue at the end of the day, enough to warrant such borrowings as "good business sense".

So a government run casino in Cyprus, how does that work? Five days a week from 07:30 to 14:30, and one afternoon in the winter? Seventeen public holidays? Forty-two days annual leave and the same in sick leave? The bloody places would be closed all the time!

But why borrow money that you don't need to in order to bloat the (already oversized) gubberment even further...?

Let private companies provide the money and take the risk...

No! Casinos are 24/7 and it should be the case in Cyprus unless business does not warrant it or can't sustain it such as during winter.

Id it doesn't work out because of the Unions (which the RoC will need to tackle Thatcher style) then they can always be privatised down the track. The licence alone will get the RoC its money and then some.

No chance of 24/7 if it is Government run.
