Yesterday, I was in the Engomi AlphaMega shop and needed some potatoes. I had a look at the display. Going from the extreme right towards the left, I observed:
- some expensive "organic" spuds (which ones aren't organic?)
- some 5 kg bags at, I think, £2.50
- some large sprouting murphies
- about 8 or 10 cases of some nice looking potatoes of varying sizes from largish down to smallish, caked with mud. Above the middle of this row of cases, there was a label that clearly read "Potatoes £0.45/kg". Even though I consider this expensive, it was easier just to pick up 1½ kg. When I took them to be weighed, I saw the label said 0.65/kg. I protested and the lady told me the price was right. I said they were very clearly labelled 0.45 and I took her along. She looked up at the label and said that it applied only to the large Sprouting murphies, which were at least 1½ or 2 m along the counter from the label. She then pointed out another label, at least 2 m further along the display, to the left, stating "New season's potatoes 0.65". This was nowhere near any potatoes, at all, above some red onions and garlic, and crowded in by a number of other labels for various kinds of onions and suchlike.
I protested strongly and asked the lady to call the department manager. He came and the scene was repeated. I insisted on having the potatoes at the price they were marked at and the manager refused. I asked that the shop's director be called, when the manager told the lady to type a label at 0.45.
It is not the 30 c that I saved that counted. In my opinion, this was a deliberate attempt to mislead clients into thinking that the price was less than they were actually charged. I wonder how many other people fell into that trap???
Moral of the story: carefully remember the price of the fruit and veg when you select them and then check the labels on the bags. If they don't concord, kick up a fuss.
