Another Blow for Free Speech in Turkiye

Postby bill cobbett » Tue Apr 16, 2013 12:30 am

The Turkish concert pianist Fazil Say has been given a 10-month suspended jail sentence by what passes for a court in Ankara.

His huge crime ... ???

To tweet blasphemously...!!!

Specifically to retweet... "I am not sure if you have also realized it, but all the pricks, low-lives, buffoons, thieves, jesters, they are all Allahists"

...and to tweet that a nearby ... "mosque had rushed the call to evening prayers, suggesting that the muezzin may have had a lover waiting for him or been eager to have a drink..."

The sentence even brought this reaction from the usually Turkophilic EC Foreign Affairs Head Catherine Ashton who said Brussels was "concerned" by the term, which "underlines the importance for Turkey to fully respect freedom of expression."

More on Turkey…

If I had any fears of Turkey mending ties with Israel they’re now completely gone!
