As for cracks on walls etc there are little plastic boots/shoes you can insert at each end of the long steel rods that allow the rods to expand and contract as required and prevent the house from cracking.

That’s the beauty of building your own home… you can do all these things that make a big difference.

I hope it won't fall on your head one of these days...

Friends have confirmed meeting with bank manager on Friday - means there are NO problems with paying for property from bank deposits! :D Scaremongering myth busted!

Also - two more offers on properties have been turned down. Methinks friends are being over-optimistic at getting a "bargain" during Cyprus' much publicized "Crisis" - they have just e-mailed to say remarkably many families are out enjoying themselves eating and drinking as though there is not a worry in the world. So hopefully they will get the hint and stop putting in offers and actually deal the asking price so that they can secure a property and move on! :D

(Can't say that to them though as they will accuse me of pro-Cyprus bias. )

Oh, in which case we'll tell them.... get the would-be thieving carpetbaggers on here to benefit from our advise... we will be go easy on the cheapskate opportunist buggers thinking they can take advantage, filthily making "offers" in these tricky times.

Erm - now you come to mention it, I did give them the link to CF some time ago so they could well put 2 and 2 together

- Would just like to stress they are NOT carpetbaggers and their bargain-hunting is just normal behaviour, for them. :)

I'm sure they'll secure a deal before the week is over.

That's efflorescence which has nothing to do with heat coming or going through walls.

The walls get soaked from heavy rainfall and then the strong sun evaporates the wetness causing salts which raise the plaster.

Yes and if you look the comment about the thermal properties is separate to that about peeling rendering.

That's interesting because in Oz, Cypriots are generally regarded as being very tight. They never deal the asking price, even if the asking price was a bargain already.

Real scamsters and low class scummy people. I am not kidding.

The young australianised ones are ok generally, and there are a few really good ones, but most are just really low class, disrespectful, judgmental, gossips, who are very political and very negative it makes you feel unhappy just being around them which you would try to avoid as much as possible.

To be honest, Greeks are a little better I have noticed. But not that much. Definitely, Cypriots are a bit weird!

Very dangerous people they are too.

GreekIslandGirl wrote:What is it with Brits and taking the damp with them wherever they go? You are not an expert on Cyprus just by living in a Brit enclave and just because you've retired there for a few years. My birthplace and home is in Cyprus and you'll never makeup to my experiences just with your few retirement years in the sun.

As I've said a million times, Cypriot homes do not need air conditioning and they certainly would never suffer from damp if they did not have air conditioning and people would have fewer headaches and less sinus troubles if they stopped using air conditioners! None of my homes have or have ever had air-conditioning - we just open windows! And the only time we ever had a spot of damp was from an earthquake crack which we didn't repair in time.

Some of us have real homes - not just retirement homes! They don't have to look big to make a statement and be built on the cheap just to manage a "mortgage" and then lead us to reselling problems.

Open some windows! Get used to the outdoors! Bugs and all.

The most bueatiful houses and architecture in Cyprus INMHO are the old stone cottages in the villages. They stood the test of time, have thick stone walls which keep the heat out in summer and the warmth in winter.

But I wouldn't go as far to say that aircon or heating is not required because that is untrue. My family's paternal dwelling in the village is my favorite for sentimental reasons and it is a great house with great history but it was renovated with the mod cons including heating and aircon. There is only so much an open window can do especially in the stifling heat of summer.

Modern dwellings in Cyprus have a greater need for heating and cooling because they don't make houses like they use to, and if you are a Brit the requirement for cooling in summer is understandable as it will take time for them to adjust.

I know about heat. Seen days of 52 degrees Celsius in the desert and I know what that feels like but I can't imagine not having cooling installed for when it is needed and I don't know why you would want to put up with bugs and all. Sounds awful!
