The entity known as the TRNC is under the effective control of Turkey, and a lot of the land in Karpas has reputedly been bought up by Israeli capital so as to be developed into tourist facilities.

Last time I drove up that way it looked like it hadn't been touched since the 50's. Pity it was a pleasant drive if you didn't hit too many potholes!

Thank you for confirming that Cypriots are helpless bystanders to this destruction.

Come on, gumbare, Karpas should be left as a natural park.

of course it should Tim, but you explain it to the terks. the annan plan would have put a stop to that but our brothers in the south did not like the idea of sharing power. so they left us in the hands of the turks and now they complain about what the terks are doing.

back home we have a phrase - papaza. in other words you have a complaint go to the priest. you give them an inch and they dont just take a foot or yard or a mile, they want their cake and eat it - the whole lot.

na fan da skada. thats all they deserve. of course with the usual exception of the decent gcs, they are an exception. but how many are here 2? the rest are full of shit.

Incidentally, Turkish Cypriot opponents of this road construction project staged a demonstration there some while back. CyBC's Biz/Emeis television programme went out and interviewed some of the protestors and also some of the local villagers (the area is nowadays mainly populated by people imported from Turkey) who were staging a counter-demonstration - they want this development (a case of IMBY rather than NIMBY!).

the locals were told that the people who were demonstrating were anti-muslim which is why the locals attacked the demonstrators in karpaz. the locals are keen on the idea anyway because it means they will get a few more crombs if this thing goes ahead. the destruction of the environment is not in their minds. but look at this more globally. who are the ones who destroyed their environment and who are not.

the most developed nations are the destroyers of environment and the poorest nations are the ones who are protecting their environment at their own expense. and the most developed countries are destroying these countries environment and taking the benefit themselves. it is a very unfair world i am afraid.
