‘Buy Cypriot products to save jobs’

The University of Cyprus is beginning a campaign to battle unemployment by promoting the purchase of Cypriot products.
University Rector, Constantinos Christofides said that during an economic crisis, when unemployment is dangerously rising, everyone should make an effort to help save as many jobs as possible.
He added that the current period in time should be marked by solidarity and acts aimed at social cohesion. “If each one of us buys Cypriot products, essentially we will create an obstacle against the rise in unemployment,” he said.
“In that way we hope we will not reach the levels of the other southern European countries,” he added. “In cases when Cypriot products are not available, people should prefer buying Greek products as an alternative,” Christofides said.

If the Cyprus Government had a deficit and a good portion of this overspending went into developing a viable manufacturing base, then this crisis wouldn't be half as bad.

The major advantage of other countries that have deficits such as US, UK, Japan et al is that they have industry and do not rely on tourism, growing water lemons, bananas, olives and Kolokasi.

There is no reason why Cyprus can't have any industry from building cars, ships, Defence technology, lenses, solar panels, electronics etc etc...

We have the people and know how. Money is in short supply unfortunately, but it is a case of one step at a time and building relationships with other countries and having joint ventures.

Water Melons! I type on the run all the time and type fast and go without any proofing. Because it is on the run I use an IPhone. The idea is to waste as little time as possible because my time right now is quality time with my kids and today they just caught their first waves. The Water Melon and Kolokasi growing I will leave till they're older.

Mitsingas still produces shoes, and i think there is a luggage manufacturer in Cyprus, cant remember its name though...and for those who dont know this little tidbit, after the war in 74, Cyprus began producing anti tank bazookas....

such protectionist ideas are self defeating. people will not buy what you produce if you dont buy what they produce.

as to the bazookas being produce since 1974 how handy was that, perhaps they can use them against the banks. after all they are the new enemy right.

In Cyprus there are lots of people who produce bushes and trees for ornamental or other purposes.
