Famagusta is the Venetian/Genoan name given to the city. The Turks call it Gazi Magusa and the Greeks Αμμόχωστος. All major locations in Cyprus have 3 to 4 names. They are all historical and merely an issue of preference.

gazi is given to all places and people that were involved in war and did not surrender and survived. i have never heard anybody refer to magusa as gazi magusa no matter what the authorities impose from above.

And I've never heard anyone refer to it using any of the above. Everyone called it “Varosi”.

I dont understand why people have gotten so heated up about the name of this area of Cyprus? whats the problem you use the Greek name and we use the Turkish one why so much anger over the name and no interest in making the place a joint venture that will work?

The Gazi was given to Magusa after 1974.

...if you are a Cypriot vp, it would not be "maras" that you would, 'give back'.

...as for security, that threat comes from the criminality of Individuals. they are not Greeks or Turks, or the thousands of others who lived and breathed in this city, they are the extremists who seek to divide us for their gain, only "Greeks" and "Turks", cannot say, i love Cyprus first.

I did not arrive at the conclusion that we should unite, we are two different civilizations and faiths. you cant blend them together to make one, that's asinine. Your civilization has just invaded our space, expropriated our property and installed Islam and a one way tolerance.

I have always maintained that Turkey should withdraw from Cyprus and take the trash out with her. You can and should go with them.
