I saw a piece on CyBC last night that filled me with hope. Two Cypriots are building and exporting small gyrocopters (similar to helicopters) from a building that looks no larger than the average garage in the village of Tochni. They have applied for a German patent for their products and plan to expand the business once they do. They already have plans for a third, more ambitious model. Apparently they have already exported 27 of these aircraft.

1) reduce port costs and increase port efficiency to lower the costs of importing and exporting cargo and to make Cyprus a popular hub for trans-shipments.
2) concentrate on light industry so we are self sufficient in as much as we can be of the smaller household /domestic item, if not become a net exporter/
3) I understand Cyprus used to be a significant supplier to the UK garment trade,m making shirts etc., - I heard this declined becuse of union imposed rerstrictions on eg the number of shifts, etc Look at reviving that.
4) call centers (suggested above)

It goes to show how much they were ripping us off all these years!

Things are a lot better for me so far. :D

It looks interesting, but I doubt its originality and more importantly its usefulness.

Patents are useless, because they are not valid in China. The Chinese reverse-engineers can reproduce this in a few hours and then sell it for 1/10 of the price.

Anyway good luck to those lads. I hope they can prove me wrong.

CyBC may have put an excessively positive spin on this, but the man they interviewed said that several foreign companies had actually applied for the manufacturing rights, but they had decided to carry on making these things in Cyprus.

Probably they offered them a halloumi and a loaf of bread (CY expression). If you search google, you will find thousands of similar products.

Innovation is a challenging field and many years of exhaustive effort are needed to reach worthwhile results.

Although kuru has a point on the innovation aspect,
These guys are more centered around designing and building aircraft for 'individuals or companies', also modifications and turbine conversions.
That's an incredible concept for the Cyprus reality. I'm speechless.

Well done I say.

Don't believe it. That child - in your above link - doesn't look Cypriot. Looks Russian:
