The truth about the situation in hotels is that the Cypriot employers kicked the locals out to get foreigners who accepted less wages. Blame no foreigner for the situation Cypriots brought upon Cypriots.

As for the highly qualified foreigners with good jobs in Cyprus. There are lots of highly qualified Cypriots in other European countries with really good jobs. I'm currently working in another European country and I'm Cypriot to the bone. Every time an unemployed person from said European country comes to me and gives me shit I tell them to fuck off.

One suggestion. A lot of well-qualified, highly experienced people in the financial industry are about to lose their jobs, and they are all fluent English speakers to boot. Cyprus should try to get some of the back office work that is now outsourced from major financial centres such as London and New York to other locations (such as India).

its called the market, where our hotels are competing against hotels in Greece, Turkey, Spain, Egypt, etc, and where the hoteliers either cut costs so they can compete or thy close down and about the only place where there is probably much room for savings is in labour costs.

The trouble then is that Cypriots wont do the jobs for those wages.

I hate to say it, but we are going to see some very well qualified Cypriots waiting the tables and working in the kitchens of tourist restaurants this summer, and I sincerely hope that it will only be this summer.

Nobody stole your jobs, you gave them away because you didn't want to clean hotel rooms or wait on tables for low wages. I was in Rhodes last year, huge hotel, ALL the staff were locals as far as I could tell. It's up to employers to hire who they want, I expect most of them will have unemployed cousins who worked in banking, thank God for nepotism, the foreigners won't get a look in.
Cypriots are fortunate in that they have relatives abroad who will, no doubt, do all they can to support Cyprus, perhaps us "charlies" and semi-Cypriots will suffer fewer disparaging remarks in future.

I'm afraid you are talking bollocks. There are many foreigners in highly paid jobs, such as doctors, nurses, teachers, academics, etc.

Well, I forgot, you don't live in Cyprus.

Bollocks yourself, where did I say that foreigners don't do highly paid jobs? There are 24,000 Romanians, 19,000 Bulgarians, 9,000 Filipinos and 7,000 Sri Lankans according to the last census. Are you seriously suggesting they are all in well paid professional jobs? Idiot.

You must be blind if you haven't seen the foreigners working in cafes, bars and hotels. A visitor to Cyprus notices these things, a local like you with his head up his own arse sees bugger all.

Do you speak English? Now FO.

From what I was reading last year I think that happened a lot in Greece, too. .

Something my wife has noticed is how customer service has improved in the shops. They have been falling all over her at Mellis. .

Sugar (1kg) at a local supermarket went from 1.35 to 0.79 in a fortnight!

It goes to show how much they were ripping us off all these years!
