Postby gillx » Sun Mar 24, 2013 1:42 pm

Hello everybody, I'm writing my bachelor thesis about the cyprus problem and I have one issue I don't understand about the presidential elections 2003 so I thought that maybe you can help me. I'm wondering why did AKEL support Papadopoulos? I really can't get it :D Thanks in advance

How do you expect us to recall the temporary election games that were being played 10 years ago? Couldn't you have gone for a more recent election which would be fresher in our minds?

What exactly you can't get? AKEL is a left wing party. DIKO (Papadopoulos) is a center party. The previous decade DISY (right) was rulling, so AKEL (left) supported DIKO (center), so that that DISY (right) will not win the elections. They should have done the same thing this time by supporting Lilikas instead of letting DISY to win the elections.

Spot on.

If Papadopoulos had been re-elected we wouldn't have been in this mess. The man had some really huge balls.

He could afford huge balls, Milosevic paid for them, in cash!

Personally, I don't give a flying fuck. Milosevic' money was better off in Cyprus than in Luxembourg.

Papadopoulos was competent and cared about his country.

gillx where are you from? I am guessing you are not Cypriot. Our history is not one of class war since we were not industrialised, neither did we have conflict with feudal owners within our own ranks since we were always occupied by others. The enemy for Cypriots has always been the foreign invaders. Thus as a people we are used to working collectively to defend out interests. This has given us a very powerful and subtle grasp of dialectics. AKEL does not seek to impose anything it seeks consensus as we move towards communism.

tsukoui: It's true, I'm not Cypriot, I'm from Czech Republic.
Sotos: Actually, I expected that as it was in 2003 the elections were mainly about the UN plan for settlement in Cyprus. Actually, what I know, Clerides decided to candidate only to finish his work (UN plan) and then leave the presidency. So I thought that also the AKEL's reason for Papadopoulos support had something to do with this. But of course, since I'm not from Cyprus, I can be wrong - It's quite difficult to make research about that
