If you would be so kind as to translate your reply........

I was not aware of that about the British Sovereign Base Areas but maybe the Russians will be much more welcome! Your addressing me as 'mate' indicates you may not be a Cypriot citizen but again you may prefer to be a member of the Russian Federation rather than the Commonwealth. From what I have read on these forums just this evening the understandable animosity to the EU would indicate that the Commonwealth would be a preferred option. Take some time to read some of the posts and you will see that what I write is true.

I am 100% Cypriot ;) Russian Federation is a country. EU is a union of countries. Commonwealth doesn't have any practical cause... so what you say is really meaningless. Regarding the bases the Russians would be indeed more welcome instead of the British ... I am sure they would give at least something in return for them, unlike the UK.

I will translate it if you can answer the following: What is the UK's obligation regarding Cyprus?

We only need/needed that and not your money.

Mate... the UK doesn't even pay what they own us for the bases. Personally I think the whole "Commonweath" thing is ridiculous. Totally unrelated countries with the only thing common that they were under British rule

The UK does not owe anytyhing on the SBA: what was claimed was rent for the use of space not on the SBA.

The UK owes SFA for the SBA as they are SBA. :D

The didsputed rent is for use of non-SBA areas.

(For the avoidance of doubt I think the SBA are an anachronism and the territory should be handed to the ROC as a part of a comprehensive settlement)

Some would say that Chechnya and Dagastan, for example, are not a part of the Russian Federation but separate countries in their own right. Once you get into bed with the Russians you will very soon realise the error of your ways and may even fall into the same morass that the above named places are in plus you may want to update yourself on the situation in Georgia.

The SBA's are exactly that and the Russians will not get access to them. Once they get their feet into the door that is Cyprus you will find that the much vaunted gas find will be usurped for the benefit of Russia only and all the profits will either go to Moscow or into bank accounts of the Russian Oligarchs who by that time will have complete control of everything that you as citizens of Cyprus currently take for granted. God help you all if you go down that route.

David, welcome to the forum, we don't particularly want to get into bed with anyone, but as the west is spurning us we have to survive and the only (so it seems) person showing any willingness to help is Russia. We has a similar problem in 1974 regarding alignment with the russians and your US and wonderful UK fucked us by assisting turkey to invade us. They now hold 37% of our country, so why you think it is so bad for Russia to be hear is anyones guess.
The amount of money we are seeking is pocket money for the UK/US/EU they could easy our current pain so we wouldn't have to fall in the arms of the Russians.

As for the SBA, they are on a time frame, they were illegally installed and will be removed for and imperialist tendencies by you or the the DOG you can stick up your asses.

We don't want Russian warships here, we don't want British troops here and we certainly don't want Turkish shit here either.

Thank you for your interest, but please don't be a smart arse!

Have a nice day.

As cyprusgrump rightly points out the SBA's were set up as a part of the Independence process but please do not let the facts get in the way of your fatuous claims. Please also tell me how the UK helped the Turks to invade your country. This is a new one on me and I await your reply with bated breath!

What you do not mention is my wish that the Commonwealth could help you overcome your present problems but you care to ignore that and politicise your argument by saying it is only the Russians that want to help you. All I will say about that is to advise you to read again what I wrote about the Russians' intent. As usual with the Russians all you will get from them will be very short term gain for long term pain. Be very careful what you ask for.
