GIG, it's the Germans who wanted to drive out the Russian influence from Cyprus and to demolish the Cypriot banking sector. Why all this nonsense anout money laundering? Germany was playing a dirty political game to undermine and weaken Cyprus and kick out the Russians from the Eastern Med.
Losing Russia would be very dangerous for Cyprus because of its support in the UN Security Council. Not just for its money. We don't give them so much leeway in cyprus for nothing in return.
All the Germans have succeeded in doing is giving Putin a chance for a foothold into the EU through Cyprus. Putin has yet to show his hand. But if he plays his cards right he could end up the big winner here.
Cyprus has brought Russia to the EU table - thanks to Christofias. This game of semi-punishing Russian money in Cyprus, is being enacted by Merkel and Putin - together - whose ties have never been stronger since Hitler and Stalin got together over Poland.
Putin is on record complaining of losing revenue over laundered money leaving Russia. So he does want to tackle this. Cyprus does tax the money that ends up here, so that's fine as far as he's concerned - plus the EU.
Russia and Germany both abhor Turks. Fine. We should be OK there.
I believe they (EU and Russia) have got together for a BIG sweep on Cyprus' assets. Gas and banks. Germany is already being paid to look after people's money. How wonderful is that for them? Russia can cut off gas supplies if it is left out of getting more in the future.
Why would either Germany or Russia want to lose little Cyprus?
It is pivotal!
To reiterate - I hope our politicians keep reminding all the others that Cyprus is STILL under occupation from Turkey and this disease has to be healed!
