PRESIDENT Nicos Anastasiades said yesterday that savers made to pay a tax on bank deposits as part of a sovereign bailout deal will be compensated by shares in banks guaranteed by future natural gas revenues.

Officials have also said Russian investors are interested in buying a majority stake in Cyprus Popular Bank and increasing their holdings in Bank of Cyprus - the two biggest banks on the island.

Heavy Russian involvement in Gas exploration and mining will have the added benefit of added security against Turkey.

They should've sent some money when Christofias asked for it. Now they risk losing their little Russian colony in the Med.

Putin to turn off German gas? I doubt it. But he could hike their prices...

Steve Keen, professor of Economics & Finance at the University of Western Sydney, told CNBC that Russia could retaliate against the perceived proxy attack on its citizens, and their money.

"If you try to target the Russians, and there's President Putin acting under the image of the 'strong man' of Russia, why would he not then decide to shut down gas supplies to Germany until that was righted?

“If you're going to attack money laundering then attack it directly, don't make Cypriot peasants and small businessmen collateral in your campaign against Russian oligarchs. Declare the campaign rather than doing it under the carpet like this too," he added.

I don't believe this is about driving out the Russians. If the EU wanted to do that, they would have targeted non-EU depositors. They also wouldn't have offered the shares.

Nope.

The EU and Russia - jointly - are maneuvering what's happening behind the scenes. Partners. Our positive legacy from Christofias.

A multi-pronged attack on removing Turkey, as the fly in the ointment to peaceful Gas extraction, should be what Anastasiades asks for in return - if he cares for a greater good than just saving the banks.
