Cyprus to Join Partnership for Peace

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Cyprus to Join Partnership for Peace

Postby Demonax » Tue Mar 05, 2013 2:32 am

Cyprus inches closer to Partnership for peace:

Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides today met with the Ambassadors of Britain and France in a move to promote an application for Cyprus to join the Partnership for Peace organisation.

Kasoulides said the application will be submitted after a series of diplomatic moves to prepare the ground and obtain support by key countries.

The Partnership for Peace (PfP) is a programme of practical bilateral cooperation between individual Euro-Atlantic partner countries and NATO.

It allows partners to build up an individual relationship with NATO, choosing their own priorities for cooperation.

In a seperate development, Kasoulides also said he will visit Athens in the next two days to prepare a visit by President Anastasiades, his first official visit after taking office.

Meanwhile, Defence Minister Fotis Fotiou met with Greek Ambassador Vassilis Papaioannou, discussing security issues in the eastern Mediterranean region.

Fotiou said they discussed coordination of action by Cyprus and Greece in facing Turkish threats in connection with hydrocarbons exploration.

Seems a small price to pay for a degree of protection, if only a diplomatic one, for the CY EEZ from the neighbourhood thief Turkey.

Turkey does not have a veto in the PfP. Also, the US, the EU and the UK want Cyprus to be closer to NATO and the West and are fed up of Turkey obstructing closer co-operation between the EU and Nato over Cyprus.
