repulsewarrior wrote:...a multinational force such as the one that would be stationed in Cyprus will allow for a training of Turkish troops in NATO where the discipline they'll learn will creep into their own troops. this is a dangerous thing to Leaders who think Armies are for killing. indeed, Greeks, Cypriots, Turks, Brits, and others will work together, in scope larger than the base they call home, terrifying for those who like things just the way they are.

...the Turksish Army has exhausted its welcome, at least for Cypriots who will trade them for another Force.

A mixed army sounds good on paper but in reality who will take the decision to mobilize in times of crisis?

what was it the greek commander put in charge to protect the cypriots said when approached by a tc minister about the attacks on the tcs in 1963 again. you should have not started it he said.

What is it that people dont get about security. you cannot control who provides the security for somebody else. what is so difficult to understand.

Sparadic fighting between elam and grey wolves, rioting between north and south extremists? bombing of Turkish or Greek embassies? The forcing out of parliament of TC MPs? GCs or TCs not sticking to agreed solution?

...Lordo, don't you think that Cypriots, all Cypriots, have a deep mistrust of Turkey, simply because it constantly demonstrates that it depends on winning its desires from brute (or dark) force? don't you think that the enormous size of its Army, comparitvely, is also a justification for this fear? with NATO, Turkey does not leave Cyprus, but it will be far more difficult for Turkey to act in a political manner with its Army in Cyprus. it is a great compromise fraught with danger, for the Republic, as much as it is for its Turkish and Greek Citizens, (and NATO), when it comes to control, as you say. but, it is a step forward. why do you think this membership is a bad idea?

@vp, the Turkish Army can do this better?
....and please do not base your reply on the "peace" we have now.

rw i never said it was a bad idea. please read my post again. i am saying without peace in cyprus terkey will veto it and she has the right to do so.

but at another level lets go back in history. hat is the cyprus problem all about. was it not the case that usa wanted cyprus in nato and makarios was getting close to ussr. was that not the reason why the coup took place. to splt the country up into two. one under greece and one under terkey both in nato. so if you like the idea of the perpetrator of the worst crimes in cyprus be rewarded like they did with the resources go ahead and reward them.

in reality if there is peace tcs will not accept the complete removal the guranties so nato will be the next best thing for them but it is still wrong which ever way you look at it.

as to the gcs being against turkish guarantee, of course they are. if it was not for them in 74 there would not be one tc left.
