How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

You are a funny one,Source! I can't figure you out.Sometimes you sound like a ultra nationalist bigot, and sometimes you say sensible things like the above, which shows you are capable of original thought. You might be the right person to ask this:Was Alexander the Great Greek or Macedonian?Or does it depend who you speak to?I'm honestly trying to figure this out.Was there such a person?Or was he a composite of a few different historical characters?

Im not an ultra nationalist biggot...I want what is right...and the current Turkish occupation of Cyprus is wrong...as well as the Ottoman opression of Greeks being wrong. simple as that. The thing is though...most Turks cannot admit to the deplorable acts done by there ancestors and are almost brainwashed by the words of Ataturk.

I see Alexander the Great as being Greek...Macedonia back then was like another tribe or district as Greece. Its like the little joke in England saying Geordies from the NE of England arent English because they act so differenty to people from other parts of England....but if such tongue in cheek points were recorded down in history...would we have people in 2000-3000 years time saying the Geordies werent English at all...

To me tho this still doesnt make his conquering of the Middle East and Asia a good thing though. Some people say he was conquering the Persian empire in order to protect Greek lands and liberate other lands...and that he promoted race realtions back then. Still, a conqueror is a conqueror and no one likes having foreign cultre forced onto them.

As for Greeks and civilisation...I know our ancestors contributed greatly to western civilisation...but we also had to learn off other people in order to develop ideas etc.

We all want what is right,Source, but cannot agree on what that is.
I am on record for saying that Turkey's continued presence on the island is wrong. They had legitimate reasons to invade in 1974,but they should have just restored the 1960 constitution and the agreements which allowwd them to invade and then withdraw. They are not only occupying the GCs they are also occupying the TCs,and as you say nobody likes being occupied.

Maybe if you were not only and always attacking the Ottoman rule, without ever conceeding that they were not always as bad as you want to protray them, some Turks and TCs might even agree with you.
Sure using the power of the gun to subjugate another nation is wrong but that was how things were done in history. You know that.Given how long the Ottoman rule lasted in occupied territories,if they really wanted to totally assimilate any nation they could've done it.The fact that they allowed people to speak their language and to practise their religion was a progressive act for their time.remember there were no european human rights courts those days. The ottomans chose the multicultural model, living people largely alone if they paid their taxes. We need to judge things not from todays vantage point, but from historical perspective. Please, don't take all this to mean I am justifying imperialism or colonialism.I am just trying to poin tout that if you want people to respond to you more positively you need to consider their points of view as well.Same goes for the recent history in Cyprus. If you only blame one side totally and ignore the wrongs done by your own,you will only antagonise people.

Thanks for the info on Alexander.I have so much to learn about history and so little time to do it in.Who were the Geordies anyway?Never heard of them.Their decendents never made it to Australia,I suppose.
If I were you,I too would be very proud of what Greeks contributed to world civilisation. But I see your point about rubbing other people's noses in it.

lol...the term Geordies is used for people from Newcastle, the North East of England. Many of them say that they arent English, that they are Geordies. They dont mean it literally, they are just proud of where they come from. Thats why im makeing such a comparison with ancient Macedonians.

I suppose you could compare Ancient Greece to India...which was made up of many tribes before they united under one flag after British occupation.

No? Just a bad tempered bigot then?

I want what is right...

And that is the whole of Cyprus as a Greek controlled island, right?

and the current Turkish occupation of Cyprus is wrong...

Of course, because it stops the Greeks from carrying on with their genocide of the Turksih Cypriots plans.

as well as the Ottoman opression of Greeks being wrong. simple as that. The thing is though...most Turks cannot admit to the deplorable acts done by there ancestors

Hmmmm...yes, and that will make your pain go away just like paracetamol gets rid of your headache, right! LOL

and are almost brainwashed by the words of Ataturk.

Ataturk really pissed you off, didn't he? LOL

I see Alexander the Great as being Greek...Macedonia back then was like another tribe or district as Greece.

Just like all the countries that now speak English will of course be seen as English in 2-3000 years time but right now they live apart and have different flags, that's all. :?

Aha, Greeks "liberate" other lands, they never invade. Why didn't you tell us that in 1963 then, maybe we would have been happier to be "liberated" by you instead of being murdered.

As for Greeks and civilisation...I know our ancestors contributed greatly to western civilisation...but we also had to learn off other people in order to develop ideas etc.

LOL...the Greeks went all the way to Persia and never ever slaved, killed or raped anyone, just like they didn't in Cyprus during 1963 to 1974.
