I am not against encouraging local businesses against major corporations but by local business I see people making a 5-10-20% net overhead after all expenses, hell, even 50% would not be bad on some things but when it's more like 200-500% on certain things then I have a sudden desire that all these highway-robbers disappear off the face of the EARTH, not just this island and any reasonably-priced items such as what can be found on Amazon would be HUGELY welcomed by most, even in close-knit Cyprus.

Look, this is NOT a good time to assist foreign companies with access to the Cypriot market and your personal materialistic needs are hardly as important as the wellbeing of our economy, so kindly drop this whole stupid thing and disappear.

More fool you if you are prepared to pay double to shop locally.

I'm all for supporting the local economy but I need the cash too. If I can save €€€€€€€€s buying from Amazon I will continue to do so.

It is THE MOST important thing to me, when it comes to personal budget, to each their own, are you telling me that most Cypriots buy according to how they want to support the local economy, that this is a priority to them ? Then how come LIDL in Limassol is STUFFED on Saturdays and things fly off the shelf, a foreign-owned company but Orphanides, the "locals" are gone bust ? :?

Those that can afford to buy most things locally and pay the prices, let them continue doing that . For the rest of us, which I believe constitute a majority, let us hope that Amazon listens to this...

Lidl-Cyprus employs people living in the RoC and the company pays taxes to the RoC, so how can you compare them with Amazon-US? :?

Its actually Amazon Luxembourg, not US. Luxembourg for tax-purposes of course. If Cypriots and Cyprus were so concerned about people paying their taxes correctly, then it wouldn't be the tax haven, cash-stashing-lair for oligarchs that it is...

UK has the same issue with them.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-20559791

The truth is some things is wrong...right now, the one that irks me the most is not having access to online shopping as I had in other countries. I couldn't care less about the profit of local companies...as long as they have complete disregard about my pockets, let them go bust, so be it.

In fact, there is clearly an over-bloat-ness present in all sectors in Cyprus, from too many restaurants, too many retailers of various things, etc. People need to start doing other things as well other that buy and sell at a huge markup, start producing things or whatever else tickles their fancy.

Regarding LIDL, let me tell you I've seen people thay I know own a few peripteros emtying shelves at LIDL when certain sales were going on and I have actually seen certain non-LIDL branded stuff in their peripteros which signals the fact that the local distributor was, himself/herself trying to ripoff by selling at higher than retail which is why he was getting stuff from LIDL to re-sell. Not normal. Many things need to be corrected in the country.

Not gonna happen, there isn't even an Amazon.gr. But Free Super Delivery to Cyprus on the other hand is feasible as much as I can figure.

Even if it was not free but "El Cheapo" delivery, how it is in Spain for example (2.99 E regardless of how many things...I would even be happy with 5 or 10 E per order for Cyprus , I would order in "bulk" ) , it would still be much better than what they ask for now. Part of the reason is that the postal services here are atrocious so they can't rely on that so they have to use couriers instead for larger/more expensive orders. But I'm sure they could work something out.

***An example, my wife was trying to order a curtain from them last week, weighing about 2-2.5 pounds, one kg, finally she found a model sold by Amazon as others were not shipping to CY, the item was about 25 quid and the postage 38 quid. BTW, this still came out cheaper as she went to a local curtain shop that was asking 115 euros for a similar curtain, with what she believed to be poorer/cheaper material so in the end she got it from Amazon for shy over 60 pounds which works out to 75 euros or so. Now you cannot tell me that the Cypriot curtain shop was not ripping me off, if for something worth 15-20 GBP in the UK they are trying to get 115 EUROS ! *** At least in that department, IKEA is here but for other things, it's no-man's land !

And BTW, more orders from Amazon would still mean some extra money/jobs in Cyprus for the postal/courier services at the least  .
