Again on the myth that Turkey is well-endowed with water resources...

Zaman reporting today on the continuing drought in Turkey.

First paras...

"...Abnormally high winter temperatures, which are 11 or 12 degrees Celsius above seasonal norms, and lack of precipitation this year have rung alarm bells for drought in Turkey as meteorologists warn that although they expect precipitation in March and April, this will not be sufficient to eliminate the risk of drought in the country.
Turkey has been experiencing one of the warmest winters in its history this year. Air temperatures are above the seasonal norm. Speaking with Today's Zaman, Professor Orhan Şen from the meteorological engineering department of İstanbul Technical University's (İTÜ) faculty of aeronautics and astronautics warned that they don't expect precipitation until the end of February, adding that even if it rains unexpectedly, it will not be enough to fill the reservoirs, whose volumes are already alarmingly low.

Underlining that Turkey has been experiencing a serious period of drought, Şen stated that an agricultural drought started late in 2013 and Turkey is now experiencing hydrological drought. “This year, the amount of precipitation is low and air temperatures are far above the seasonal norms. Turkey has been experiencing extraordinary meteorological situations. The drinking water supplies are not enough to meet the needs of people, particularly in big cities such as İstanbul. For example, there is only 15 days' worth of drinking water left in Yuvacık Dam, İzmit province. People living in the province are not aware of this alarming situation, thus they don't try to use water economically. The municipality transfers water from Sapanca Lake to the dam, but the water level of Sapanca Lake is also very low.” ..."

They really should listen to the rain man, and farmers.

Government ministers know nothing. Look what happened in the UK when the government ministers stopped 500 years of dredging...... You need Noahs ark to get round the South!!

Maybe we should set up an imaginary pipeline to Turkey to dispose of it

Actually the "newly built dam" is nothing new. And it is not even at Panagra it is the dam at Myrtou which existed from the 70's! They simply raised the wall to a height of 35m to increase the capacity. It is about 3 km from the shore at a level of 75m above seal level.
Google Earth coordinates 35.325271, 33.077925
More info here:

If we consider there is a pressure loss of 5m in every Km of pipeline imagine the initial pressure required....

The Alakopru Dam in Mersin is at Google earth coordinates 36.181403, 32.895708 .
Height above sea level about 70m.
The conclusion out of this is that the "free shipping via gravity" is impossible...

Occupied Myrtou, not Occupied Panagra... oh.

We forget there's Gravity-defying Turkish Manure at work, which will also get it up the Kyrenia Mountains to supply the Occupied Part of Nicosia and Occupied Environs.

For anyone interested to calculate the costs involved for shore to shore transfer of water at the usual 60% efficiency here's the data
Pressure loss 5m per Km of pipeline
Total length of pipeline 81 Km
Quantity to be delivered 8561 tons/hour (75million tons per year)
Use table 1 from here: Costs per KWh in Turkey are about the same as in US
http://www.google.com.cy/url?sa=t&rct=j ... 5280,d.Yms

Considering that 325851 US gallons=1233 tons

I think the results could make lordo very happy. But then again I admit I got too rusty on maths

Isn't the clue in words like "abnormally high winter temperatures", "above seasonal norms", "warmest winters in history" etc, all indicating that it's an unusual situation. As I said earlier in this thread, sometimes you have drought, sometimes dry weather, sometimes wet weather, sometimes floods. It averages out which is why you have dams.
