"...Abnormally high winter temperatures, which are 11 or 12 degrees Celsius above seasonal norms, and lack of precipitation this year have rung alarm bells for drought in Turkey as meteorologists warn that although they expect precipitation in March and April, this will not be sufficient to eliminate the risk of drought in the country.
Turkey has been experiencing one of the warmest winters in its history this year. Air temperatures are above the seasonal norm. Speaking with Today's Zaman, Professor Orhan Şen from the meteorological engineering department of İstanbul Technical University's (İTÜ) faculty of aeronautics and astronautics warned that they don't expect precipitation until the end of February, adding that even if it rains unexpectedly, it will not be enough to fill the reservoirs, whose volumes are already alarmingly low.
Underlining that Turkey has been experiencing a serious period of drought, Şen stated that an agricultural drought started late in 2013 and Turkey is now experiencing hydrological drought. “This year, the amount of precipitation is low and air temperatures are far above the seasonal norms. Turkey has been experiencing extraordinary meteorological situations. The drinking water supplies are not enough to meet the needs of people, particularly in big cities such as İstanbul. For example, there is only 15 days' worth of drinking water left in Yuvacık Dam, İzmit province. People living in the province are not aware of this alarming situation, thus they don't try to use water economically. The municipality transfers water from Sapanca Lake to the dam, but the water level of Sapanca Lake is also very low.” ..."
