Nikitas, I don't want to take anything away from my good friend, Pyro, but I want some credit also on the "face saving" shenanigans by Turkey! :D

Kikapu wrote:I'm just wondering if all this talk about which municipality will distribute which water is not just a Red Herring as to why the flow of water has stopped from Turkey, or is the real cause are of technical reasons, like the ones you (Pyro) have stated before? Turks will say anything just to save face!

Salt water purging they say. Well, at the predicted flow rate of several tons a minute, for several weeks now, whatever seawater was in the pipes should have been purged long ago.

Man I learned a lot about hydraulics in this thread.

Nikitas wrote:This is an educational thread for sure. Is it possible to pump water through an 80 km long pipe? I recall something about the head of water that the pump has to overcome to pump efficiently. Eighty km at a diameter of 1.5 meters is one hell of a head to push by one pump. Has it been done before anywhere?

Theoretically the head required to move it 80Km is only 200m - I calculated it some months ago. This corresponds to a pump delivering about 20 bars pressure. The biggest problem though is not the pressure but the speed required to move ~ 2.5 tons/sec. Don't think for a minute the pumps required are some toys, we are talking for beasts here the size of a room, most probably working 3 phase 11,000 Volts.
Notice not only liquids but even gases behave like solids at high speeds. What do you think holds a plane on the air? At high speeds the air behaves like a solid... Now imagine water at high speed, it behaves like gravel. Eats pipes, eats everything. Eats ship propellers...
Plus a million other problems it evaporates at room temperature, fills the pipes with bubbles, the bubbles when pushed behave like detonators.. The flow is extremely turbulent, this means at particle level half the water pushes forward the other half wants to go backwards.
I was working at a shipbuilding & repair yard and have seen such pumps emptying 1 million tons from the drydock within an hour, but we are talking for short distances there of a few meters and some maximum 20m head. And even there the pipes and fittings were leaking all the time, and we used smaller pumps to throw the leaks out in the sea. Here's a photo of a similar drydock to the one I was working

To answer your question no such thing was never tried in the past, and I strongly believe the Turkish Engineers were not stupid, they knew it all along that such project was not sustainable, but what could they do? Erdo the Sultan got the idea he forced them to do it.

...indeed, once again it is as "we", as Cypriots, that we are better off in a situation such as this, "control", as you say, Lordo.

...curious, it is said that the electricity bill is about one million lira for three months of the pump's operation, in Cyprus. Can this help deduce the size of the pump(s), and capacity?

...i work in shipyards too, Joining the habitable spaces. Piping is my bane because no matter how many times they are tested, it seems, after the ship is finished, fittings (gaskets) fail. And it is very much to be expected, in some cases when bidding, the estimate is multiplied seven times, (even fourteen times), to secure for these eventualities (and deadlines).

if there are any leaks the water will escape out of the pipe not in as the water pressure inside the pipe is higher than outside. first the assholes said it could not be done it was pipe dream and propaganda. now they are running around like a headless chickens commenting on things they know fuck all about.

...i have thought about that, there are the two variables, depth, and density, which cannot be ignored.
