Bad weather of recent winters blamed for delays, and now the weather in the Summer is being blamed for the non-arrival of anything remotely wet from Turkiye.

The project manager trying to convince us that it will be finished in August... but he doesn't tell us which August.

..."PLANS to start pumping massive quantities of water to northern Cyprus via pipelines from Turkey has been delayed.

The switch on for the multi-million euro project was supposed to take place yesterday, to coincide with the anniversary if the Turkish invasion of the island in 1974.

There was some speculation that the opening ceremony was to be conducted by Turkish President Tayipp Erdogan.

However, Birol Cinar, the director of the project admitted that work was well behind schedule. He blamed 'adverse weather conditions', saying the project would probably be finished sometime in August.

Cinar added that only 61.5 km of the 80km-length pipe line has been completed, much less than had been expected.

It is unclear if the remaining 17.5 kilometers of pipe can be laid within the next few weeks.

When complete, the network will pump 75 million cubic meters of water annually from Turkey to Cyprus with pipelines 250 meters under the sea. ..."

Here's a interesting water story, reported by Afrika, summarised by the CY PIO.

"... 7. The Turkish army cuts off occupied Arsos village’s water supply

Under the title “The army commander cut off the water”, Turkish Cypriot daily Afrika newspaper (23.07.15) reports that tension was created between the Turkish occupation army and the inhabitants of occupied Arsos village. The commander of the battalion, major Erdogan turned off the valve, depriving the inhabitants of the village from the water they have been using for 41 years.

Inhabitants of occupied Arsos complained to Afrika that their animals and gardens remained without water.

Rasit Ozsaglam, mukhtar (head) of the village, turned on the valve but was “harshly reprehended” by the commander, who said to him: “Am I the water department? If I said that the water is cut off it is cut off”.

It is said that the commander cut off the water in order for the occupation soldiers not to remain without water. ..."

Adverse weather? We have been seeing winds in the normal range, rarely exceeding 7 bofors, adverse is 9 and over.

Still want to see how this system will work. I am confused by references to "pumping" while on the other hand there is talk of natural phenomena at work.

water runs downhill naturally.
it is called gravity in case you were not aware.
if its uphill you want to send it then pumping will be required.

Elementary physics says water runs downhill, finds its own level, etc. The "pumping" is in statements by Turkish officials, and that is what is confusing.

This is a novel project in terms of distance covered, the method used (suspended pipeline) and the materials chosen (plastic pipes with special connectors).

I am still trying to figure out if such a complicated and expensive project solves or masks a problem and if it is better than locally owned and operated desal plants. Both the pipeline and the desal (reverse osmosis) plants are technical fixes. The first is untested the latter fully tested technology open to ongoing improvements at relatively low cost. It is these considerations that make this project intriguing.
