Has Cyprus ever asked for water. Back in the early 70s, when we almost got an agreement, negotiated by Klerides and Denktash based on separate municipalities etc, there was talk of a water link. It was just talk, and I know this from a very reliable and very close source.
After 1974 and especially after the withdrawal of recognition of the RoC by Turkey the idea was dropped and no one ever talked about it. Firstly because it would be suicidal to rely for a vital resource on a country which is occupying part of RoC territory, is openly hostile, constantly creating problems and does not even recognise the RoC as a nation nor does it accept its right to exist. There is also the insult of building a water depot on invaded land and then offering the invasion victim the water, this needs no explanation!
Also, since 1974 the RoC instituted a multi dimensional (water damming, conservation and desal program) which has proven reliable.
Davut is banking on Turkish water being so cheap, do not be surprised if he announces a grace period when it will be given free of charge, that Cypriots will be lured. Turkey must have poor intelligence and appreciation of its image and standing in the GC community. The water proposal is an indication of this skewed intelligence and erroneous analysis of the situation.
Mainland Greeks are in awe of what they perceive as the competence of Turkish diplomacy. This water lark, along with the undisputed non starter "zero problems policy" and the discredited neo ottoman theorem shows that they are not competent. Something is seriously off kilter.
Turkish policy in Cyprus often resembles one of those cartoons where a bunch of medieval guys are rushing at open gates with a battering ram. They could have solved the problem and been in on the gas deal long ago if they weren't caught in their own posturing and bazaar mentality.
