Remember those old Zastava training rifles?

Well they're going to Africa.

Cyprus to send assault rifles to Mali to help African forces fight militants

A spokeswoman for Cyprus' Defense Ministry says the country is offering 2,364 assault rifles to an African-led military force to fight Islamic extremists in Mali.
Elena Fysentzou says the Zastava assault rifles, currently in storage, can be "immediately available."
Fysentzou said Friday that the Yugoslav-made weapons, which fire a 7.62 mm cartridge, may be delivered "as soon as possible" but could not be more specific.
French-led forces have ousted al-Qaida-linked militants from northern Mali, including the three northern provincial capitals of Gao, Kidal and Timbuktu, following a three-week campaign.

What a ridiculous idea. We should have donated them to the Kurds.

Absolutely! That was standard issue when I enlisted in 1983.

They were much easier to disassemble than G3s that's for sure, but I'm struggling to find any more advantages... :?

Well they're going to Africa.

I'm not surprised... that's how the world works... you buy something today and some years later you pass it on to Africa!

It's an income generator.

Those Zastava were modeled after Kalashnikov. I just used those in KEN... if I remember correctly they needed more maintenance than G3... maybe thats why they are sending them away... they don't want to maintain them anymore.

WW2 rifle.

I know Greece used to have them.
So I absolutely have no doubts some made their way over to Cyprus. Obviously.

I didn't use them but they had them at KEN and I remember holding one and thinking how freaking heavy they are compared to the more modern rifles! I wonder if they still keep those!!

No M1's in 1999.
Basic training: Zastava.
Standard army issue: G3.
