There was an element that the author neglected to mention and its impact on the society in Cyprus and that is the 74 Turkish invasion of Cyprus and the consequent 200,000 refugees that migrated to the free areas of Cyprus. This influx of Greek cypriot refugees effectively doubled and tripled the populations of these towns in the southern part of the island. Could this influx been the beginning of Cypriot society losing its groundedness as the author mentions?
I agree with your proposal for the change in mood and atmosphere in Cyprus post the events of 1974 but the 200,000 GC refugees did not migrate but were forced by Turkish violence and threats to flee their homes into the southern part of the Republic of Cyprus, which remained free from Turkish invaders.
I'll add that civilised people the world over are more fearful of what they may lose by over-familiarity with "strangers". The culprit is fear.
