There was of course a long history in ancient Greece of the acceptance of male homosexuality and in particular pederasty involving older men with 12 to 17 year old boys - see eg Homosexuality in ancient Greece - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homosexuality_in_ancient_Greece

This to me suggests cultural aspects possibly play a role.

From your source on what the ancient Greeks wrote about 2,500 years ago whilst the rest of the world was bonking silently in caves:

The ancient Greeks did not conceive of sexual orientation as a social identifier as Western societies have done for the past century.

What does that tell you was happening before?

It suggests that it's only in the last century that sexual orientation became taboo or outlawed (UK).

Anyway, once the people of "Pretanea" were eventually taught to write, they certainly scribbled away enough about homosexual relations.

Hi guys thanks for your comments, more so swaying in the socio-cultural camp on emphasis for homosexuality so far. I would like to say that from face value if one appreciates that Homosexual men (including myself) actually physically get erect and so attracted to other males, would this not dampen your view of a social persuasion for Homosexuality. If I honestly try and feel attracted to females and I know this is the “cultural norm” I still never get erect, so for me at face value adleast I would have thought homosexuality to be more biologically based.
Do you men or women get physically attracted for members of the same sex, and does this affect your self identification as heterosexual beings? PLEASE ANSWER

Personally, I do not feel physical attraction to other women even to the ones which my "straight" girlfriends admit they would not mind sleeping with such as Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston. But I can, however, appreciate that these women are extremely attractive (not so much Jolie), just not arousing as far as I'm concerned. But then, I also don't get physically attracted to MOST men. Only to a very few sub-types such as Kevin Costner (my hubby's look-alike), Sean Connery, and other macho-looking/Mediterranean-looking guys of that type but who are not necessarily Greek. Even then, these men fall into a category which I would say makes one more "receptive" and the rest depends on how they speak and what they say and do.

I think men are genetically geared to become aroused much more easily then females (it makes sense). Females have to be more choosy who they mate with as they invest a lot of biological time into child-rearing which is the most likely outcome in heterosexual relationships.

Also, there is a predisposition towards the third or fourth male in a family of many boys to turn out more effeminate and less likely to mate with females. This could be because they would provide less competition to the first-born males (alpha males).

Hope that helps. :)

As usual your knowledge of history is flawed as from the time of the Buggery Act of 1553 to the Offences against the Person Act of 1861 Homosexuality was potentially a hanging offence so nothing past century about represive laws about homosexuality. This is why Shelley and Byron went to eg Switzerland or Italy where attitudes and laws were better.

oh and by the way some of the oldest European houses were built in Britain in 11000 BP at Star Carrs in Yorkshire ( a site occupied for as much as 500 years and including the oldest known carpentry in Europe) while in the Orkneys there the magnificant structures of Ness of Brodgar, etc, which were occupied for about 1000 years from 5200 BP to 4200 BP or so,,,,just a tad before the Mycenaeans (to apply a modern label)

It's mental my good man... mental!

Sex forms in the mind… the signals of which are then sent out to the rest of the body.

Thanks you guys, very mature and succinctly to the point answers. Can I ask though – the most important part of me asking this question in this post: Do you men or women get physically attracted for members of the same sex, and does this affect your self identification as heterosexual beings? PLEASE ANSWER

(Greek island girl has already answered, yet others have not)

Women are biologically conditioned to have an active imagination. I can dream, can't I? :)

That's what you think!

I can tell a homo from a mile away... the voice is always a dead giveaway. Something about the vocal glands that all homos seem to have.

It takes one to know one.
