but the government has decided to bail out the banks and where does the government get its cash from? Yes, you have guessed it, the taxpayer, thus we the taxpayers will end up having sooner or later having to find the cash...

Most Western Countries at least offer Capital Guarantees for cash deposits into banks.

Banks use those deposits to invest elsewhere, such us lending out the deposits from you and me to home buyers, business and other countries such as Greece at higher interest rates. This portfolio is where the banks derive their profits.

Problem is, with the recent haircut, Cypriot Banks have written off about 17 Billion from their balance sheets, which means the cash deposits from you and me have vanished into thin air.

Banks are obligated to still give you and me access to our funds, but the funds do not exist. So if there is a run on banks, they will collapse.

So the risk is that the banks will go bankrupt. They are on the verge of this right now. The Republic is then forced to bail the banks out by recapitalising them and guaranteeing cash deposits which are effectively loans to the bank by you and me.

if you say so, if you say so, but we the taxpayers still end up with the tab.... may be the Greeks should pay it al linstead, after all it was our *ankers kindness in buying Greek Junk bonds that got the *ankers into so much trouble in the first place.....and as Aunty GiG will tell us the Greek economy is wonderful, the Greek are going to save the Universe, got to be true, Aunty GiG says so,,,,

It looks like henceforth Cyprus will be run by the (1) Electricity Authority, the (2) Telecommunications Authority, and the (3) Shipping Authority!

Err, I think nothing has changed then! :?

Were these three top guns actually paying any taxes all these years? :?
