Microsoft Has Failed

Postby Demonax » Mon Nov 26, 2012 5:16 pm

Compelling argument by Charlie Demerjian at SemiAccurate that Microsoft has already entered its death spiral:

Microsoft is in deep trouble, their two main product lines are failing, and the blame game is intensifying...

The problem is that if you are locked in with a choice of 100% Microsoft or 0% Microsoft, once someone goes, it isn’t a baby step, they are gone. Once you start using Google Docs and the related suites, you have no need for Office. That means you, or likely your company, saves several hundred dollars a head. No need for Office means no need for Exchange. No need for Exchange means no need for Windows Server. No need for Office means no need for Windows. Once the snowball starts rolling, it picks up speed at a frightening pace. And that is where we are...

Microsoft has utterly failed in phones, utterly failed in tablets, and is seen as a has been by the next generation. The company can point to technical superiority all day, but people aren’t buying. Windows 8 itself seems to be dropping sales of PCs too, and that will have a knock on effect to their server OS as well, something that is also losing share at a frightening pace. To stop the decline after only losing the majority of their marketshare, Microsoft took the unfathomable move of forcing a touch UI on servers. If this doesn’t make clear the depths of how lost Microsoft is, and how reactionary their fixes are, nothing will...

Those who aren't buying windows 8 are sticking with Win 7 ... which is is still Microsoft. The same happened with Windows Vista when many people kept XP.

No need for Office means no need for Windows.

 When they say semiaccurate.com do they mean accurate 1% and inaccurate 99%? Microsoft will fail eventually but not any time soon. Apple failed already and if not for Microsoft to bail them out Apple wouldn't even exist today. Did you know this Demonax? ;)

There was no bailout as such, Sotos. The investment by Microsoft in Apple was a settlement of a patent lawsuit. In fact, the investment was just an initial payment that would be spread out over the next few years. The settlement allowed Apple to stave off bankruptcy and the rest is history.

Look where they are now. Apple is the most valuable company in the world. Today the iPhone brings in more revenue than the whole of Microsoft. One Apple product, something that didn’t exist five years ago, has higher sales than everything Microsoft has to offer. More than Windows, Office, Xbox, Bing, Windows Phone, and every other product that Microsoft has created since 1975.

Do you think Apple will bail out Microsoft when the time comes?

Microsoft is collapsing. You may think that this is kind of harsh or maybe even an improbable outcome, but as you read through the story, you see that he is exactly right.

Ms would fund them so as to keep some competition and avoid being a monopoly to evade the US government that was on Ms' back.

I've never come across a clueless bunch as you lot.

Microsoft's $150m investment in Apple stock was part of a settlement over a patent lawsuit. Microsoft needed to settle as Apple showed that thousands of lines of programming code for video acceleration used in Windows came directly from Apple's QuickTime. Microsoft and Intel got caught lifting the source code and paid for it. It was Steve Jobs’ idea to settle the case by way of Microsoft buying Apple stock, as well as a patent licensing deal and a commitment to keep developing Office for the Mac. Apple never looked back.

MS did not "save" Apple to prevent anti-trust action. Firstly, the famous DoJ case was brought in 1998, the year after the deal with Apple. And the suit was in regard to Netscape (which was already effectively defunct), it had nothing to do with Apple. It was about MS abusing its monopoly to leverage the browser market. Apple didn't have a browser until Safari in 2003.

Further, MS was still declared to have a monopoly in desktop systems anyway, so even if that was the motive, it didn't work.

It wasn't about patents DemonDude...

The problem: United States v. Microsoft

"The plaintiffs alleged that Microsoft abused monopoly power on Intel-based personal computers in its handling of operating system sales and web browser sales. The issue central to the case was whether Microsoft was allowed to bundle its flagship Internet Explorer (IE) web browser software with its Microsoft Windows operating system. Bundling them together is alleged to have been responsible for Microsoft's victory in thebrowser wars as every Windows user had a copy of Internet Explorer."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_v._Microsoft

Saving Apple was necessary to thwart monopoly accusations because IE for Apple was a separate browser from Windows and Bill Gates used this in his defense in court, so Steve Jobs capitalized on that…

"Apple missed out and by the end of the decade was on its last legs. It was only saved, ironically, when Steve Jobs convinced Bill Gates that Apple’s failure would only add to the anti-trust problems Microsoft was having at the time and got him to invest $150 million in Apple."

Steve basically said to Gates…

“You’ve used me (Apple) in your defense but I’m drowning here and if you don’t give me a helping hand your defense won’t be around for too long!”
