This looks pretty impressive and if this can be sustained with longer (2hr) movies could make a tablet an attractive propostion as watching movies on the go is something i could be interested in but is playing videos with those particular brightness/volume settings a fair test?

How about things like internet usage, up-loading/down loading /sending/reciveing emails, taking photos etc, ie a range of activities?

Does anybody else absolutely hate tablets? Touchscreen is fine with phones and small devices, with the Samsung Galaxy S3 pushing it a bit. I cannot stand tablets. I do not see the point in them when you can have a perfectly good laptop for the same price or less! iPad or Android, they are all rubbish. Razer's Project Fiona looks good but it is not entirely a touchscreen (has control buttons for gaming).

Why get a tablet? I've used iPads before and their touchscreen is slow and laggy, their battery life is awful, watching movies on them is stupid because you can do that on a laptop/TV/desktop, sending emails on them is stupid because you can do that on a laptop/phone, the games are all suited for phones e.g. Angry Birds, they are overpriced, and finally, they make you look like a complete arse when you are walking around town using them to take photos of stuff when there are better cameras for a third of the price or when you are sitting in Starbucks (using any Apple product in Starbucks is completely unacceptable). Same goes for Android and the knock-off tablets.

Can someone please explain the advantages of a tablet over a laptop and don't say portability because the MacBook Air and other notebooks are almost the same size as an iPad.

can do all that with my galaxy S2 phone...

plus more with an OTG USB connection, like moving any data to and from, like from a USB flash drive...unlike apple devices...

very important to make sure the device supports OTG USB...and how it access it...for example on the galaxy S2 you have the file app for access...for the galaxy tablets and S3 phone it autoboots the file app...for generic tablets i am not sure...even some HTC phones do not support this function...

so you need to ask
1...if it supports OTG USB
2...how the device accesses OTG USB

you are right pointless devices as most needs these days are more than met with current mobiles with largish screens...this is why microsoft penciled Jan for their release of the surface win 8 tablet...running INTEL i5, IVY bridge chipset and running a real win 8 PRO operating system...in the form of a tablet...same experience as the desktop...this not only will knock off the tablets/ipads but it will re-shake the notebook market as well...i foresee endangering the mac market as well...we are witnessing the re-modelling of the notebook maket.

rumour has it, microsoft are releasing their own phone as well...

the Zune did real good in the market about 5 years ago...not....Apple is on the mantle now for a few more years..not only are they creative and seemingly forerunners in technology but anything Apple nowadays is also a fashion statement...not an easy thing to surpass, anytime soon anyway. But it will fall to something new in the future (5-7 years)...does anyone remember Nokia, or blackberries?

Sure, if your needs are a lot of blah blah while on the road… all you need is a phone... a $20 phone!

What are you fantasizing about? It's just a skinny laptop with a touchscreen! It was first done a year ago by Lenovo! In fact I was selling desktop all-in-one PCs with full touchscreen support like 2 years ago !

Touchscreen POS machines (the first computers who got a touchscreen) we were selling at around 2003!

The worst thing about tablets or anything touch screen for that matter, is that the screen gets filthy with smudges and so full of germs but users become oblivious to their own filth and are quite happy to pull them out in public and even show friends their photos!

Most idiots don’t even notice the special cloth for cleaning them and probably dump it with the packaging!

WTF!!! ... "dump it with the packaging" ...!!! Are you mad...??? Have kept all the lovely, to die for packaging, for our Macs and iPhones all wrapped up in protective plastic bags, ... now to go and find the cleaning cloths that must be in there somewhere...

Are you Steve Ballmer in disguise? They’re going to cost as much as an Ultrabook, but users get a smaller screen, impractical keyboard and poor battery life. Microsoft said it would start at a minimum of $1,000. You do the math… two iPads for the price of one Surface? I don’t think so.

Few people will adopt a tablet because it works with Microsoft Office. Google Android and Amazon offerings will continue to be less expensive alternatives to the iPad, while Apple will maintain its market lead on the high end. Between these alternatives, there don't seem to be much room for Microsoft.
