Google's Nexus devices don't offer an SD card slot either. If you really want to use an SD card reader with an iPad, Apple offers up the Camera Connection Kit which allows you to transfer full-resolution photos and videos from your digital camera to your iPad by USB or SD card. Everyone else uses Dropbox, iCloud or iTunes sync to get stuff on and off the iPad. Dropbox offers 5gb of free storage as does iCloud which is plenty for everyday use.
So if you could download the full kindle App directly from Amazon you wouldn't do it? Why wouldn't you want to have the OPTION to download apps from elsewhere if you want to? Their own appstore could still be the default and you could use it as you use it now... but limiting you to their own appstore is a huge disadvantage for iOS.
The Appstore is convenient, secure and cheap. The quality and range of apps on the app store is by common consent one of the best things about using ioS. It's incredibly popular. The App Store is controlled by Apple. But iOS has MobileSafari, through which anyone can do whatever they want.
But I agree that iPad / iPhone have much more accessories ... this is one of the few real benefits of iOS devices.
The reason IOS devices are selling in their millions is not just because they have better accessories. It's because of the great user experience, slick software matched with a great design and performance. Of course you pay a premium for that. But you get what you pay for.
