Unloading of unpackaged bulk cargo threatens health
FAMAGUSTA – The unloading of unpackaged bulk cargo at the Famagusta Port without any measures to prevent the scattering of the products is threatening human health as well as the environment.
According to a news report by Filiz Seyis in Kıbrıs Postası, the unloading of unpackaged cement is especially problematic, as it scatters over many kilometres with the wind. Other problematic cargo include animal feed, wheat and barley.
Doctor Okan Dağlı, an activist of the Famagusta Initiative, stated that the Famagusta region ranks first in the northern part of Cyprus in the occurrence of cancer cases and underlined that such activities an the port is a factor that increases cancer risk. Dağlı stated that there also is a serious increase in lung diseases, allergic asthma and allergy cases besides cancer. “The fact that unpackaged products, and especially cement scatters all over Famagusta seriously affects the people in the region,” Dağlı said. He called for measures to prevent the scattering of the products during unloading or importing packaged products.
On Friday, many trade unions and non-governmental organisations gathered at the Famagusta port to protest the issue.
"Trikomo is still polluted"
NICOSIA – Environment “minister” Hamit Bakırcı in the northern part of Cyprus has denied reports in the media that almost all of the pollution caused by the fuel-oil leakage accident in Trikomo has been cleaned. The coast and rocks are still polluted, according to Mr. Bakırcı, who added that there still are solid carbon waste on the sea bottom. On 15 July, some 100 tons of fuel oil had leaked into the sea during an attempt to refuel the AKSA power plant near Trikomo in Karpasia. Last week, the media widely reported statements made by AKSA that 90% of the pollution on the 13- kilometers sea shore had been cleaned. According to Kıbrıs newspaper, Mr. Bakırcı, who was speaking at a workshop on “The Effects of Coast Pollution” by the Turkish Cypriot Doctors Association, contradicted the news reports and pointed out that even though petrol tankers continuously circle Cyprus causing some small-scale pollution, this is the first time the island has witnessed such a large-scale environmental disaster. Mr. Bakırcı said that the cleaning efforts in the region are continuing and added that the “government” is following the issue closely. “Minister” Bakırcı underlined that issues relating to the environment should be included in education and added that the “government” aims to start providing environmental training next year.
Protest against Lefka dumpsite
LEFKA – Non-governmental organisations, some political parties and residents protested against the creation of a dumpsite in Lefka yesterday. The Lefka “municipality” is being accused of randomly dumping garbage in the area turning it into a dumpsite.
According to a news report in Yenidüzen, the protesters stated that the dumpsite is harming the environment and public health and demanded that it is relocated, pointing out that a fire that had started in the dumpsite a week ago had continued for days.
The protesters underlined that there is a fire at the dumpsite at least once a year and complained that Lefka “mayor” Mehmet Zafer has not taken any measures regarding the problem.
The Lefka “municipality” is accused with unsanitarily disposing the garbage it collects from the villages within the boundaries of the “municipality” at the site.
