More from the rubbish regime in the occupied areas:
River slope in Akanthou a dumpsite
All the solid waste that have been produced in the last 10 years in Akanthou are being dumped on a river slope near the village.
According to a news report by Osman Kalfaoğlu in Kıbrıs newspaper, the increase in the construction activities in the mid 2000s and the ensuing increase in population in the area, resulted in the river slope 100 meters to the east of the village becoming a dump site.
It is reported that in the winter the wind scatters plastic bags to the nearby forest, polluting the area, and the garbage flows towards the dam built by the “state.”
Akanthou “mayor” Hayri Orçan, on the other hand, is reported as saying that the area was chosen to be Akanthou’s dumpsite because it is out of sight, the odour does not reach the village and that the contaminated waters from the garbage do not pollute the ground waters. Mr. Orçan stated that it is both technically and financially impossible to transfer Akanthou’s garbage to the garbage collection station in Famagusta.
Eşref Ünlüsoyer, the head of the Environmental Protection “Department”, told Kıbrıs that the department will conduct an assessment on whether the dumpsite in Akanthou is suitable. According to Ünlüsoyer, there are some 70 similar dumpsites in the northern part of Cyprus.
