How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

...almost correct, the littoral process (and the little bacteria) will take about ten years to clean up the mess, and it is the best process which Mankind can only attempt to duplicate through technology. a constant turning of the berms is recommended over the years to expose the rock surfaces to wave action.

If the oil has come ashore then the best thing to is to wait. Do not start clean up yet. Give it a few days to Let it all come ashore that easily comes ashore and then clean it up in one go. Does less long term damage to only have to do one clean up rather than three, or four or five, simply to make it look good on TV. Then let nature work.

I'd prefer the one but continuous clean up before it gets to shore. If that lot goes to shore there's an awful lot of wildlife it will kill. Seen it often enough, been informed often enough by a zoologist friend of the importance of cleaning oil in such disasters as quickly and efficiently as humanly possible.
Birds, turtles anything and everything gets suffocated by the stuff. Takes a lot of volunteers and expert all hands on deck to tackle such a task.

North spill will take months to clean
THE OIL spill off the Karpas coast in the north Gastria will take months to clean-up and the effects on the environment will be long-lasting according to the head of the fisheries department.

Loizos Loizides said yesterday that despite finally accepting help from the Greek Cypriot sides, the Turkish Cypriots have not allowed anyone from the south of the island to approach the affected areas.

“Unfortunately the clean-up is not going well and despite handing over 400 metres of absorbent booms on Wednesday the whole process is very time-consuming,” he said.

Loizides added that even though the Turkish Cypriots finally caved in and sought help from the government, the damage had already been done.

One positive, he said, was that the oil spill has not spread to southern shores or seas.

If its all yours then you should be able to clean it yourself without asking for the Governments help.

The daily review of the press in "trnc" by the CY PIO gives as some more info on this environmental disaster...

Local hotels had engaged bull-dozers to clean the beaches and were simply dumping the polluted sand inland. They have been stopped from doing this.

A water desal plant in Occupied Vokolida has been shut down. Water is now being supplied to locals by bowsers (trucks).

Tourism badly effected in the area. A figure of a 95% drop in bookings reported. The unofficial muhktar of Occupied Gastria is reported as saying "no tourists remain".

The leak is now reported to have been of over 100 tonnes.

A clear-up team from Turkey is now on station. there is criticism of the Rubbish Regime for the delay (of 72 hours) in getting them in.

Afrika reports that the beaches of Occupied Famagusta have been closed for the rest of the year.

People, esp children and pregnant women have been warned to stay out of the water... 'til it is analysed.

Elsewhere we discover that there were two previous much smaller leaks during the re-fuelling of the plant earlier this year. One as far back as March. .... so there were warnings that things were not right with the refuelling system.

The agencies of the Rubbish Regime of "trnc" chose to ignore these warnings.

...it is a shame that Turkey cannot show good neighbourly relations, or that the regime in the north cannot do more than follow orders. This opportunity to demonstrate that Cyprus comes first, was lost. What with oil being such a preoccupation of the Turkish Government, one would think that they would want to demonstrate their Leadership skills in this domain. What with the economy so frail in all these countries, it would have been a good way of moving the International community to take heart, that despite the politics, they can have confidence that some priorities rise above. Cyprus should not be divided, this is a good example why it is unnatural, such harm has evolved to be a disastrous state of affairs. Turkey, (read: Erdogan), cannot blame the Republic of Cyprus for this mess, (in his mind it must absolutely not exist) although I expect shortly a statement from his Cabinet, that they are blameless,

We will pull through, we've seen harder times remember 1963-1974?
