US base in exchange for liberation?

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

US base in exchange for liberation?

Postby Jerry » Sat Oct 27, 2012 4:04 pm

If we accept the notion that there will be military bases in Cyprus indefinately and there's nothing we can do about it would it be sensible to offer them to the US. I recall some years ago that Britain (Denis Healey I think) wanted to abandon them but America persuaded otherwise so they have been kept but gradually troop numbers have been reduced. The latest move is the closure and demolition of the military hospital at Akrotiri. America, it would seem, wants use of the bases, http://famagusta-gazette.com/us-eyes-br ... 024-69.htm . Obviously there would be a price for the Yanks to pay - Turkey out of Cyprus.

Would hosting the American military rather than British be a price worth paying to free the north of the island?

Use of the bases by anyone but Britain for defensive purposes would require renegotiation of the treaties: a good opportunity to get rid of those anachronistic SBA,,,however this current government would have to swallow what ever principles it has left before they could think about USA/NATO use - after Feb, mind, when they are gone,,,,,.

however i doubt letting in the Yanks would solve the problem of the Turks as Turkey is still too important a place to the USA. in dealing with Russia.

You mean Cyprus gets rid of Turkey and Britain in exchange for a US base on the island? It sounds too good to be true. Where can I sign up?
